If you were Prince's manager what would you advise his next move to be

Us guys on the ORG are all so opinionated (me included). We always think we know best and are happy to say Prince should ahve done this, his biggest mistake was, that album sucked etc

So imagine you are Prince's manager and that he actually listens and respects your advice. What do YOU think he should do once the ONA World Tour is over, say for the next 12 months.
'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

I'd tell him to get a new manager. I know nothing about the music industry, and I can't even balance my chequebook for craps sake... shrug

To give members of the club the stated 3 seperate cds AND ONA Live set as a bonus

to get back with WB to remaster his past releases with extensive extras-(songs, liner notes) and get PR ready for anniversary..and to transfer all official releases to dvd

take a year or so off to do this correctly

take another year off to do nothing. As in relax and do nothing to rejuvenate.

Pull the ONA 3-CD Set and put out a 2 CD set of The Very Best of Prince LIVE using songs from the Hit and Run tour as well as great prformances like the Septembre boot, the final playing of Purple Rain by the Revolution, include a SVCD of the birthday performance in 86 or maybe some version of it in the new Windows Media 9 technology.

Then have a 2 hour outdoor HBO concert in New York or South Beach promoting the CD set. Invite Lenny Kravitz, Eve, No Doubt, etc. to perform as special guests.

Use the monies from the 2003 membership to fund this endevour.

That should hold him for about two months.
Six more to clearly outline what 'the club'

nod

But no more than his first decade of output (if that many) would be feasible for re-release over a short span of time. It's a project I'd salivate over and could make a success of it. Even the hardest of the hardcore would appreciate how much better it would sound, everybody would rediscover those albums all over again.

I'd announce his retirement and watch the "Haters on the Fence" Cry (You know who you are)

Get Mike Scott back in the NPG.

You want to play jazz? "Madhouse 32" with Leeds, Sheila, Blackwell, Candy, Renato, Najee, and that trombone player...

Suggest a "Producer's Compilation CD" like Quincy Jones and George Duke with several artists and "Ghost Players":

Lenny Kravitz
Kip
BrownMark
Dr.Fink
Sheila
Leeds
Rosie
Common
Ani?
India Arie
Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam (w/ Chante Moore?)
Chaka
Lauryn Hill? What about that "Turn Lauryn Hill's Mic on comment?"
Tori Ruffin
BoysIIMen
Mariah?
En Vogue?
Joan Osborne? ("One of Us")
SOA? (one song together)
TTD?

These artists would have nothing to lose [right now] by working with P on this project(well except for Lenny maybe)

Prince will only perform as composer, producer, collaborator, and background vocalist on this CD.

Announce 1 release-date a season for The NPGMC [4 times a year].

I will try to release something everytime (from the vaults, rehearsals, studio sessions, CD-Roms, concerts, guitar picks, and any behind the scenes footage of any movie.

Kill the NPG audio downloads and get a "real" NPG internet station, or a show on another net-station.

Assign Paisley Park Enterprises PR people to travel to most cities with Community Radio stations and some College stations. These Commercial-free shows play music from lesser known artist that need exposure. They play more Funk-Rock, Neo Soul, and less Hip-Hop R&B.

Schedule 2 "Q & A" sessions this year.

Release "The Ultimate Prince Lyric Book" that will include jam session notes, and studio pictures.

One Evening Outdoors Concert (Paisley Park) around that club he has built. This one cannot be announced to close to The Celebration though. It must happen shortly after it is announced (a week or two). Why? Too many "fams" will not get to see anything over the heads of others.

I like the return of "Strange Relationship" to The NPG setlist so...

Lets include "Beautiful Night(full)".

He needs another vocalist in The NPG.

Intead of "Re-mastering" some past hits and songs, lets rearrange them into new joints... These "re-compositions" will reflect his new beliefs, outlook, and skills as a musician.

Even though that he's made some changes already, I'd like Prince and The NPG to recreate the hits with new vision.

Keep using The Linn (once and a while).

I like it. You really should be his manager.

One quibble though. No year off to "rejuvenate".

I would tell him to stop alienating his loyal fan base. That has to be the absolute dumbest thing an artist can do. Especially an artist like Prince who isn't part of the mainstream music scene anymore.

When people give you their $100, tell them exactly what they're going to get for it, & then deliver.

Prince should come into Brooklyn one night on the sly and get with Spike Lee and Vernon Reid and Corey Glover and do Juniors for some serious food and then hit Coney Island for some rides at nighttime. Have some fun like that!

Okay,I'm gonna pretend that I've just been hired as Prince's manager.Prince and I are gonna sit down and talk about our plans for 2003 and beyond. This is what I would tell him...

***REMASTERING THE OLD ALBUMS---Nowadays,everybody from Michael Jackson to Madonna have had their old albums re-mastered.It's time for Prince to do the same!! For too many years, the fans have had to listen to CDs with poor sound. It's time to get his catalog re-mastered,with previously unreleased tracks, extensive liner notes, rare photos and other goodies.EVERY album from 'For You' to 'Lovesexy' should be re-mastered asap. This should be a priority!! If it means burying his pride and working with Warner Bros. again, then so be it.These CDs should all come out in 2003.

***SIGN A LONG TERM DISTRIBUTION DEAL---Let's face it,Prince needs a major label to help him distribute and market his CDs.Why not sign a long-term distribution deal with a major company (like Universal or J Records). This way,we will always know that a new Prince album will arrive every year (like in the Warner days). His career will, once again, have some order and structure.Develop a close working relationship with the company,so that they will eagerly promote and market his work.He can still keep his masters and have total creative freedom.

***RELEASE ALL FOUR MOVIES TO DVD---Work with Warner Bros. to release the films 'Purple Rain','Under The Cherry Moon','Sign O' The Times' and 'Graffiti Bridge' to DVD,with added features (missing scenes, music videos, commentary, interviews with cast, etc).

We'll start with these projects and see how it goes...

He's been doing that for YEARS without time off, I don't see why time off would influence him more to do so.

As an outsider, I don't know if that's a good idea. Prince fans are spoiled in terms of quantity within short periods of time. The rate with which he released albums was divergent from what the vast majority of recording artists of the 70s thru today release them at. Personally, I'd rather he had consecutive albums of quality than consecutive albums of ho-hum material. I'm of the opinion that burnout was just one of the aspects of his creative downfall. If it takes 2 years in between time instead of 1 to release quality, it would be worth it. Though I know that he as a workaholic in the studio works beyond that pace - unless he's changing in his older years.

Me: Get in that studio and record new songs. Leave remastering over to Femi. In the meantime I will take care of the NPGclub and make a nice selection out the Vault for download or through CD (remastered of course). You do not need to worry about it for another 12 months, and you will see on the monthly paycheck how much more new shoes, cars, clothes you can afford the next month. And oh yeah, before I forget... that new album is ready by March 31. And in May we will think about a tour. Now shut up and get to work!
