This is the album that made me a Prince fan and opened me up to a whole new area of music -- funk. Up until this point I had been a total rock fanatic, and I think it was the song "Little Red Corvette" on the radio plus seeing Prince in the videos for "1999" "LRC" and "Sexuality" (all played on MTV in 1983) that got me interested. I finally got the tape for Christmas 83 and played it CONSTANTLY. It broke -- right in the middle of the guitar solo in LRC, but I scotch-taped it together and continued playing it this way for several months until a friend took the tape and never returned it. So then I bought it on double-vinyl and blasted it on my stereo to the whole neighborhood for hours each day after school. Being 12 and 13, this year was special and significant in many ways, and 1999 was the perfect soundtrack to my life at the time. It's probably my favorite Prince album, and I love the way he put this together -- using his basement studio and writing/performing it almost entirely on his own using lots of synths and the Linn drum machine. | |
