94 East - "If You See Me" Personnel?

Does any know the personnel for this song? It is one of my favorite songs of the 94 East stuff that I have heard. I LOVE the drums and bass on this one.

So who played what? Also who is singing on the vocal version? Thanks for any help.

Since I figured Prince was on this track I think this is the right forum. If not, please move it. smile

I haven't got it to hand so someone might want to fill in the blanks.

94 East was basically Pepe Wllie's band. Pepe was the husband of princes cousin and one of the bigger names on the local music scene in 77. He got studio time and recruited Prince for some guitar, keyboards and vocal and Andre for bass. I can't remember who played drums.

The 94 East material remained unreleased until late 86, and then the first batch of material to be released as a single LP didn't include "If you see me"

Pepe Willie wrote If You See Me, and the song was first released as a "cover" version by Jesse Johnson in 1986. Many would say this the the best version to date. On Jesse's album the song was acutally called "Do yourself a favor", not "If You see me".

Prince actually recorded it as a solo number, but this remains unreleased. Prince's version is cool, but lacks the punch that Jesse Johson gave it.

The original version finally surfaced on an expanded 94 East set in 1995. Although there has been rumour that some of these tracks included on the double disc set were actually new recordings.

I love that part, especially the "mmmm...TOO SEXY." Gets me laughing for the last 3 minutes of the whole song.

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Thanks for responding and for the extra 411. I knew the 94 East backstory, I just didn't know who played what on that particular song. I never heard Prince's or Jesse's version. sad But I think it is a great song, so I can't see anyone with talent dropping the ball on it. biggrin
