'Habibi' IS a Jimi Hendrix Jam otherwise called killing Floor. How about 'purple house' otherwise known as 'Red house'.Don't know if it was someone else's before Jimi though.

I don't understand the comparisons with Jimi though.Sure, Prince is black and plays guitar but that's it.They sound nothing like each other.Prince said years ago he much preffered Santana cause he played 'prettier', and i agree with him (no disrespect to Hendrix intended)

The earliest I can recall is the original demo of 'Computer Blue' (the St Louis Park Warehouse version that lasts for over 13 minutes).

The latest is 'Habibi', Prince's own take on Jimi Hendrix's 'Machine Gun', although Prince's version is radically different to Hendrix's.

yeah. He sounds much like a Santana derivative (though I really feel Prince is the next level down as an Ernie Isley acolyte...but that's pretty much the same bag). There's nothing that really distiguishes Prince's tone to me. He has that ringing quality like Santana's "cry" or Ernie's "wail".

Some discographical clarifications:

"Killing Floor is a Charles (or Chester) Burnett original. Aka Howlin' Wolf. Many versions have been recorded including Jimi's on Live at Winterland, Jimi Plays Monterey.

"Red House" is a Hendrix original and can be found on a number of collections. I never thought Prince's opening bars sounded much like Jimi's and he's changed the words a bit (probably intentional, hence the variation in name).

Little Wing doesnt sound like anything by Prince...Little Wing came first. Geeez. If anything, Prince will have something that sounds like Jimi. Hello, is this microphone on?

The guitar lead on America and the heavy use of wah wah on the 12" version. This is his purest, most obvious "ode" to Hendrix that I can think of. It's way cleaner than Hendrix's setup, but it's inspired by him non-the-less.

Prince also likes to make feedback an important part of some of his songs. He puts the same feedback on live versions of the same songs (you know which ones). Hendrix popularized this. Hendrix and Prince both personalized their own feedback sound.

Prince has not tried to copy any Jimi signiture stylings as Stevie Ray did. Prince has his own sound while occasionally paying homage to Hendrix. Prince rarely uses the tremolo, while Jimi had his glued to his hand.

Hendrix had an almost out of control, raw, deconstructed way of putting forth a song. Prince has a tighter, more mapped out take on his rock solos.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

those who dont really know anything about music cant distinguish differences soundwise and technique wise this is not a flame but i think people should take the time to listen more and hear the differences insteadof hearing a solo and saying yeah that sounds like prince.just my 2 cents worth smile

I found a song live in Paris at the Rex (09.01.93) - Blues Instrumental...that's actually a nearly one-on-one adaption of "villanova Junction", the instrumental Jimi played at Woodstock!
There's no chance for Prince to deny his relation to Hendrix!

Raspberry Beret: "looky here, uh, I put her on the back of my bike" sounds a lot like Jimi.

The respective guitar parts to "Had U," "The Love We Make," "Cybersingle" (in addition to the Purple Haze reference, the beginning of the solo nods to the chorus of Hendrix's "Little Wing") and "Witness" (perhaps more than the other songs).

Aside from "Habibbi" I just don't see it. He sort of dressed like Jimi for a while. Also there was a purple reference. Sometimes on some live blues stuff he gets into Hendrix territory, but not so much. The "back of the bike" line does sort of sound like Jimi.

There's also the drum loop sampled in 'Tick Tick Bang', it's taken from Hendrix's 'Little Miss Lover'.
