this is exactly right.. i played a clarinet years ago which is also a woodwind and yes a sax is a woodwind.. but like toejam said .. in Prince's case on stage it would be horn

Well exactly! My brother is a classical violonist and I know how hard it is to learn, so that's why I was asking about Prince.
I haven't found the 'Face Down' video yet, but I actually remember a video in which at the very end he grabs a violin, goes towards the back of the stage and starts playing there. But you can't hear much, with all the drums, horns, etc. He seems to be just mimicking. Not sure if that's the video Snap had in mind... He plays guitar, and the only real difference is that the strings on a violin are spaced in 5ths instead of 4ths. But anyone with a good knowledge of music theory/relative pitch (like Prince definately has) wouldn't have too much of a problem adjusting. Sure, he wouldn't be amazing, but I'm sure he could belt out "Mary Had A Little Lamb" if he had to .
Playing the violin myself, I have to say that it isn't only extremely tough to learn, you also need practice on an almost daily basis - otherwise you play out of tune immediately. My violin teacher (who played 1st violin in a major symphony orchestra) used to play very basic exercises after his summer holidays for a whole week just to get back to his usual level. Even if Prince has learned playing the violin a bit, I doubt that his schedule allows this kind of constant practice.
