Origin of the term "Fam"?

Sorry if this question shows some niavete on my part but where does the term "fam" come from in the first place? Did it originate from the npg music club? Is it an issue of fan semantics like the Trekie/Treker thing? wink

Prince gave an interview to Chris Rock during his Emancipation tour (you know when he was wearing that Hip Hop ensembled mixed with Lime Green crushed velvet gHeyness).

He was commenting on how every critic is always calling his latest album "Make or break", and he said, "That's not true--I have plenty of fans..." and then he corrected himself and said they're "FAMS" because Fan is short for fanatical falloff

Anyways, despite the fact that Prince will never invite any of you skanks to his house for Thanksgiving dinner or for a barbeque. Nor will he even sign an autograph for you in a restaurant, if you can even get near him--you're family. Get it? lol

But no matter how many times I try to state this to you new power butt puppets, you always respond with some over-the-top FANatical rhetoric about how you're not a fan but a FAM. (I'm speaking to a specific subset of New Power Butt Puppet here and not everyone reading this).

So flame on yall. I'm ready for ya!!!!

Prince started it but fans/"fams" went crazy with it.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I agree.
I always thought that "FAM" is 10x more "fanatical". If U are silly enough to call yourself that term, then that shows how over-the-top U really are! disbelief

I am a fan of Prince and his music. I think that the word FAM is used by fanaticals. It's a stupid word.

You know, we all are related in some way. You might be my like 64th cousin but... we just stop counting after fourth or fifth cousins. But if you go aaaalllll... the way back to the beginning of time we all basiclly started from Adam and Eve and they started from God, sooooo since we all came from God, we are all related somehow. confused

I can't come up with anyone specific, but I know I've read interviews and stuff with the word being used and I've seen artists on myspace write fams instead fans. But maybe it is P who's behind it anyways. Not impossible.

Its the name Prince gave to best describe a particular subsection of his fan base. He was aware that there was a contingent of dysfunctional inbreds which obsessively followed him around and believed every word of his bullshit.

He didn't want to seem politically incorrect, so when he refers to the inbreds, he calls them "The family" or "fam" for short.
