Never one to keep quiet.

My wife has told her friends at work how funny it is that so many guys are on this forum. She has the impression that it's mainly men here. I've told her there are an equal number of women and I think I'm right there aren't I?

For most of us though we do need something to inspire us to make a worthy comment. Old Prince material has been discussed or at least thought about plenty if you ask me. His latest, PE, for me was ok but it wasn't exactly album of the month. Without very large or clever marketing most products will fail. Drugs obviously don't apply as they do fine without any magazine or tv coverage (bar Doherty/Winehouse/Moss/etc).

For me the most interesting thing Prince has done since 21 Nights is have a black screen on 3121. It's quite funny to wonder what he's up to. Of course it could be for the simple reason that he just doesn't know what to do with it or perhaps isn't even giving it any thought. I have an old site that I haven't updated in about 4 years for instance. One has to ask whether Prince is really that bothered about, or even aware, of his fans (I refuse to use the word fam as it sounds bloody daft and the 80s are over and I'm 36 years old not 15 and families don't have that kind of structure anyway). Ok so he released PFUnk which shows he must have some knowledge of the goings on in the fans world but even that was a rehash. I mean apart from Elton John and his bloody Di tribute who else manages to score a hit with a spruced up oldie (and who honestly gave a damn about her death anyway apart from her friends and family?)? I think Prince's undoing now is his popularity (leave stadium sales out of this) versus his age. He's not a Madonna as he can actually play, but I think for someone of his ability he really must envy the members of the NPG (musicians only) as they are of a status whereby they can do a quiet gig with fellow musicians and not worry about screaming fans flooding the ticket line. Even Maceo Parker can drop in and do these real laid back jazz clubs without the hysteria. I think that's where Prince may possibly want to be but he's screwed by his own past success.

I like David Gilmour's comment regarding groups reforming last year. He asked why they would want the money and then added that having 60,000 people who think they love/know you screaming at you is a very powerful drug. Is that what our little Prince is suffering from now perhaps? It's hard to tell with a person who never communicates. The greatest barrier of all is lack of communication and therefore understanding. Is that some of Prince's appeal though, the way he acts like a petulant child? Is he getting too old for those kinds of antics? Or worse still (for him) are we?

Personally I'm not sure if Prince would appeal more to me if he were more open and available. How would I view him if he suddenly accepted Guitarist's (magazine) many requests for an interview? It would be hell of a story that's for sure. Instead he chooses to remain (annoyingly so) an enigma. He reminds me of a girl I once new who used to pin me down and fuck me at her pace and as she chose. It was great due to that denial and inability to take. Moved on eventually however as I didn't fancy her much and there were plenty of other girls out there. Not sure if there is a comparison worthwhile there.

Anyway, bollocks over. Squirrel, I'm with you mate. Not everyone agrees with you but I'd rather stand on your side of the fight most of the time. Well the other choice is Wolfy so it's a no-brainer really (I say that tongue in cheek as I know associating his name with any form of criticism at the moment is akin to saying you fiddle with kids).

Here's the real deal with all of this. There is going to be good mixed with the bad. All we have to do is just have to pick and choose which one to participate in and what not to. I'm not for every thread in here but what can I do? Just pass on by I guess. In the end, I would hope that we can all be united in digging the guy in which we come to site for in the first place.
