Prince selling small?

I know Prince is The Artist but outside PR his albums don't sell over 6 million. The lowest mMichael had was about 20 mil.

Can we account this for the many albums he releases. He realeases an album every year. WHile his albums might sell 2,4,4 and 6 million that's 15 million for a 4 year period the same amount of time Michael has released. If we do it by a 4 year period he's not so behind.

Purple Rain is his centerpiece and sold around 20 million. I added the albums for the 4 year period around it and it came to about 30 million. Thriller at that same period has sold about 40 million. So during their peaks they were close but do you do it in 4 year periods to compare to Michael?

And Prince has made thrice as many albums anyway. People die of old age waiting for MJ to release new records. lol

I remember realizing the answer to the above stated question when I was 13--my MJ days were over, clearly, absolutly, and forever. For me, it is and shall always be prince.

This is a question of marketing more than anything. Michael Jackson sold the shit out each album during his high period until it was dry of every last single drop of money, and you can count those releases on a single hand.

Prince has done pretty much the opposite, even on Purple Rain he didn't push it as far as he could (sixth single, world tour, milk the album for another year, follow it up with Purple Rain Mk.II in 1986).

This isn't an issue of music, who's music is better than who's - that's personal taste - it's market forces.

I beg to differ. Since Blood On the Dance Floor, his albums have sold low numbers (minus Invincible, which was his lowest selling album of all his solo albums.

It's not what you earn it's what you keep. In Prince's case, he keeps earning... wink Not just fiscal gain, but increased respect and a new generation of admirers. Excellent ingredients for a longevity cocktail.

and it's also about who was being blacklisted cause he challenged his record company thus not playing the game. then years later old pedophile escapee wants 2 say that tommy motallia is the devil. if anything mr "i like both Prince and the pedophile" thread starter, go post those "facts of accounting" over at the pedophile's site and rave over there as much as u want. cause in case u haven't noticed, no one is talking about the pedophile's oscar party, no one is talking about the wacko's lip synched superbowl per4mance, no one is talking about how he's still in the studio 20 years later still trying 2 finish up his next album and how he needs (insert name of the so called hottest producer) 2 finish up tracks.
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Great points I don't think people realize how musically P was all over the map.
He mixed up genres and I think that confused the public. He also just does not seem to have the attention spam to market one record for a year or two take a break and come back again.

He just has not followed any marketing plan for selling his music.
but, he has managed to stay around and continues to make a small fortune touring and off of his rolyalties.

Look at the number of covers he has.

Why is it after over 20 years of being a fan of MJ and now having all but given up on him I see some seriously bitchy remarks and then get really defensive about him?

I suppose you'd have to ask Prince that question. He's best qualified to answer why he 'got mad'. His swamp, not mine. I just hang out with the music.

Michael Jackson. He has the #1 album in the world right now, a thing Prince didn't have since Diamonds And Pearl.

Blood On The Dance Floor: 6 million
Invincible: 8 million
Number Ones: 7 million

That's more than any Prince's albums (safe PR) and what most artists sell

However, Michael sold more with one album than Prince with all his albums released in a decade.

Musicians make music.
Producers sell music.
Prince is a Musician, and I want to hear anything he creates.
How miserable would we be if Prince had about 75 Songs out or even 150.
