Graffiti Bridge album appreciation

I don't know if this has already been done or not but I've recently dug out the Graffiti Bridge album, I haven't listened to it for ages and I don't know why - it's an absolute gem! OK there are a couple of dodgy tracks on there but there are some Prince CLASSICS

My faves are:

Question of U
We Can Funk - so sexy, this track makes me all tingly and is briliantly followed by...
Joy In Repetition - imho one of his all time best tracks

I think that this is probably one of my favourite Prince albums...
I'm not stopping. I haven't even taken my coat off

C'mon and dance while you, while you still have your cherry babe, cherry babe..

no side artists songs and maybe a few more prince songs and this would have been a classic, imo. still cool though, especially elephants and flowers, we can funk, joy repetition, etc. thumbs up!.

So true. Graffiti Bridge is the ultimate dichotomy of Prince albums.

The Prince songs are almost all incredible, while the associated artists songs are almost all garbage.

I do love Shake, though. What a great dance track. It's probably my fave Time song ever.

I was jazzed at the thought of a third double-album to listen to, but I don't think it needed to be a double album. The following tracklist would have been tight enough:

Can't Stop This Feeling I Got
New Power Generation
The Question Of U
Elephants and Flowers
We Can Funk
Joy In Repetition
Tick Tick Bang
Thieves In the Temple
Still Would Stand All Time
Grafitti Bridge
New Power Generation pt. II

Of the Prince albums I own,
none of 'em has the strongest contrast in terms of quality as much as this one.
For my tastes, I hear some of his best & some of his worst at the same time on this album.
These are the ones I like:

Can't Stop This Feeling I Got
The ? Of U
We Can Funk
Round & Round
Melody Cool
Tick Tick Bang
Thieves In The Temple
& Joy In Repition is one my fave Prince songs ever.

Still would stand all time
The latestet fashion

I like almost the whole album.

Great album! The Time's "Release It" is worth the price alone...what a slammin' funky track!!! "Love Machine" is jammin' too! "Shake" is probably the weakest associated artist song and it's definitely the weakest Time song on there...the others are ahead of it by light years.

Another reason this album is so special is because it's his first album to completely shed that plastic 80s sound (which is appropriate because it's his first album of the 90s).

I AGREE! All their tracks could have been saved for their own albums. Purple Rain didnt include Sex Shooter and Jungle Love thank goodness...it wouldve ruined the whole point.

I do like:
Medoly Cool dancing jig and Latest Fashion (although I think the bootleg version is superior and more balanced) and of course Round And Round dancing jig

They just seemed too far less than what Prince himself was putting on the album.
With the exception of Tick Tick Bang..which like someone said in a other post..sounds off trying to remake a 1981 New Wave track to a 90's New Jack track.
Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

worship As far as the Prince cuts, I LOVE IT!

I consider this to be the last album by the "old" Prince!. That's probably because almost every song was "old", lol.
I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

I always leave The Latest Fashion on my Prince only version of the album as its a duet between Prince and Morris. But I always put the remix version on just so I can have country Prince singing...

"This is the latest fashion, swing ya partner on the floor!"

OK, this thread made me go play the disc earlier. dancing jig But I'll be damned if I ever watch that movie again! I never even bothered to buy the DVD with the music videos on it. Too risky!

Take off all the non-Prince songs, and you have an absolute masterpiece. He was still in the Lovesexy spiritual mode, but had the Batman techno-computer edge.

Add back in Tevin and George Clinton, and you still have a masterpiece.

It's when The Time and Mavis are included that it becomes a jumbled mess. IMO he should have released his own album, and the soundtrack separately. But, that is how I choose to listen to it! smile

Never saw the movie... I've always been scared away by the reviews, but the album has several songs that I absolutely adore.
Change it one more time..
