P not being in the same place in his life is an understatement. And I'm not refering to his religion either. It was 26 years ago when the 1999 album came out. 26 years. That album is older than most of the folks in this forum. Yeah, it's safe to say that P isn't in that same place anymore. That said, I am one who has thought that P should not depend so much on his rep and put out better material if he's going to do so. But as far as Van Hunt, this cat so far, hasn't put out ANYTHING that could hold a candle to what P did 26 years ago. He's simply not the musician, songwriter, vocalist or producer P was 26 years ago. So yeah, he's putting out more passionate type funk than P has in recent years, sure. BUT untill Van outshines P in P's glory years, then I see no need for the comparison to P at all. Seriously. that was all Matty was saying tho

Preach! Until Van Hunt does anything comparible to Dirty Mind or anything else in Prince's younger days, it's not even fair to compare him to Prince. Van Hunt has yet to make anything that can Rival the Genius of Dirty Mind or 1999. How old is Van anyway??...the clock is tickin' you know....

That is definitely a banger. Prince wrote a lot of songs, though. He's older and just ain't cranking out bangers like he did when he was Van Hunt's age.
That just the way it goes. It happens to the best of 'em. Especially since Prince's lyrics have become kinda nursery rhyme-ish since he won't talk dirty anymore.

wait a minute, van hunt will never be prince nor be the artist prince is but he along with dángelo (to a lesser degree cus he's lazy) Andre, erykah and a collection of others give us what prince used to give us on a consistent basis. it's just amazing that one man used to do that but i wont hate on van hunt if he can give me a slice of that today. i love basketball, and mike was the guy of my generation but damnit if kobe or lebron are on fire i wanna watch. My sentiments exactly. however, i called van hunt a cock knocker at the end of my post. (a reference to the villian in the jay and silent bob movie)

[Edited 3/4/08 3:59am] everyone has a right to their own opinion but i find it funny you use Prince's weakess tracks from 3121 and Planet earth to compare. Van Hunt is funky though. I dig his music. love is a funky as track begging 2 bounce off the walls with that beat man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

MattyJam said: I didn't use Prince's weakest tracks, I selected his most recent funky efforts. Prince's funk just isn't dirty and gritty like it used to be. Maybe it's something to do with his age, combined with his religion... I'm talking about the kind of Prince who sang Head or Sexuality. I guess he's just not in that place in his life anymore.
But his recent efforts at funk just don't have that same bite. Whereas Van Hunt's new album in many respects reminds me of Prince's early funk music. It's raw, impish and oozing with sexuality. Tracks like Musicology or PFUnk sound like a middle-aged man knocking out a lazy pastiche of his old record collection because he has nothing left to prove. Van Hunt on the other hand, has EVERYTHING to prove and you can hear it in his music. [Edited 3/4/08 7:50am] c right there u isolated the problems u have with his recent "funk efforts" as u call them...it's YOU desiring 4 that 22-25 year old prince. it has nothing 2 do with what prince's music is now. u want a 50 year old man talking about going 2 a church and taking a bride 2 b and making her give him oral sex. sorry but some of us grow up a little ya know. and of course van hunt is going 2 b hungry..aren't most upstarts hungry in the game? man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81
