I often have contemplated about his influences. Ordening those influences into decades leads to the following 'list'.
Fifties - Duke Ellington (Its gonna be a beautifull night, Right the wrong) - Elvis Presley (the 'rockabilly' type of tracks like Jack U off) Sixties - The Beatles (ATWIAD, large parts of Parade, and certain individual songs) - Jimmi Hendrix (Purple Rain, Another lonely Christmas, Fury, to name a few) - James Brown (where do i start? lol) - Sly Stone (Mountains,Dorothy Parker, Make your momma happy, to name a few) Seventies - George Clinton (The Black album, La La La, He He He, Scarlet Pussy) - Earth, wind and fire (Just as long as were together, Parts of TRC) - Joni Mitchell (Sometimes it snows in april, Comeback) - Frank Zappa (large parts of the Black album and Lovesexy) - Al Green (Forever in my life, Adore) - Queen (Thunder, Diamonds and Pearls, Three chains of gold) - Marvin Gaye (Scandalous, Insationable) Eighties - Gary Numan (Automatic) - Talking Heads (parts of the 1999-album) - Afrika Bambaata (idem) - Elvis Costello and the attractions (When you were mine) - Bomb the bass, the early house movement (Lovesexy, the Batman album) - Terry Riley, New jack swing (The Graffiti bridge album) Nineties and 00's I cannot really find clear examples of certain other artists from this period who have influenced him. Its more a case of Prince recapping things he has done before, and sometimes using certain elements from contemporary dance-music, modern R&B and hip-hop. | |
