Cover art is just that....art...something to be admired and even discussed. Art can open new ideas and expand minds, it does not necessarily have to refelct, nor infringe upon the artists personal life.

... As far as I am concerned, Prince deserves a personal life and privacy much like all of us, any famous person does, but I dont see how being analytical of his art imposes....then maybe Im just not clever enough lol wink

Art needs discussion in order for us all to grow an appreciation of it. All can benefit from art in its various forms. Too often art in the painted or crafted form is dismissed today as something less beautiful than music especially popular music. most children are creative but lose their desire to create when mature. By discussing art within popular culture we are encouraging people to see the unexpected. How can someone understand a lyric like 'the colours of ones own mind' if they have never really looked at the world around them. Art helps people to do this and for most people the nearest they get to any artform other than music is graphic art within advertising or indeed - as here- album art.

I donnot think appreciation of this artform analysies or attacks the artist who created it.

Yes in an open forum a thread can take its own twists and turns but that is what a community forum is for. We have the ability to discus things we are interested in thus expanding our knowledge through reading others opinions. Yes there is too much gossip in the world and too much time spent speculating on matters that dont really concern us, and i can understand ChariotLove saying that the artist is squashed creatively by the scrutiny. This is also true.

Fortunately though we live in a world where our masters of art in all its forms are alive and we do not have to wait a hundred years to see their work and thus discuss them posthumously (spelling???)

So yes if they read all the reviews there will be the good the bad the ugly and the downright uneducated, misinformed, misjudged etc but that is what makes up the chemistry of our world the variety of poeple within it.

Probably not to!

its a shame though because an innocent chat about some art has turned into a heavy discussion about the possible feelings of someone we dont know. Most of my friends wouldnt want to even bother looking at his album covers let alone while away the hours with strangers discussing them. but hey ho! such is the crazy world we live in.

Maybe Prince enjoys people talking about some things he does, otherwise why keep the 3121 thing so cryptic and the mystery around Chelsea rodgers with the site and all, they even posted on his site that she designed t-shirts and addressed the post 'to whom it may concern' - perhaps in hind sight that was meant to be a stab at those who gossip uneccesarily feeding them a totally usless piece of information however if that was the case it simply fuelled peoples natural curiosity. I listen carefully to hs lyrics and feel as tho I have head a mixture of emotions over the years. This is to be expected as with all art maybe we project our own feelings into the song.

Maybe you have some insight into this matter ChariotLove

in regards 2 3121,i believe the number means something 4 him personally & he will never tell.its hiz way of expressing something meaningful 2 him.he haz a very childlike innocence in that regard,so i dont think its about him trying 2 deliberately generate curiosity.hiz comments on the subject r largely defensive becuz he maintains hiz right 2 express himself in that way, whilst at the same time keeping the meaning private.

"2 whom it may concern": possibly trying 2 b clever & it not working? or could b just as simple as "4 those who r interested"?

becuz hiz intellect iz shrouded by ego,he doesnt always think about how his wordz & actions might affect other people.i am unaware of him having that humane capability.also, hiz webmaster is responsible 4 alot of misrepresentation,& might suggest ideas 2 him, that he just goes along with becuz he doeznt have the scope 2 c the possible repercussions of quasi vampiralistic advertising.

The guys in my neighborhood said it was 666-dick upside down anyway.

If you look at the 0+> symbol it looks like an upside down cross anyway, within the symbol, which would reinforce the "devil theories" about the album.

You can take this one step further.

There were a lot of rumors, initially, about Prince being gay.

In the Bible, homosexuality is seen as Devilish.

So, is Prince confirming that he's the Devil/gay?

Then, he had the backwards message on Purple Rain, which was something associated with Rock/Satanic-influenced rock.

You have to wonder about Prince sometimes. Shit, maybe all the time...

I've always wondered what the 6 red stars meant.
In the order that they appear.
The one's close to the numbers 1999 could be... quotation marks?.

But what about the other two?

maybe the other 2 stars are there beside the C which looks like a moon as well as mouth/teeth..?

That's very possible.
I thought it could be that too.

I always thought the little white dots represented the stars,
and the whole image was floating in space.
the six red stars have always seemed intentional to me.

I recently pulled out several copies of the vinyl to compare.
One copy I have, has little red specs in different places on the cover.
(probably a production flaw) lol
But I found it interesting.

After studying a piece of art ,it's mind expanding to go back and see what you've missed.

a lot of nonsense has always surrounded this cover, also ll the satanic BS is a load of codswallop! I think this cover is more a dodling like we all do when young as someone else said like when at school you play around with names etc and doodle, like graphiti.

i think alot of gay fans would love this to have some meaning for them but i dont think its that deep.

I agree and have said so before in here, I think he has been surrounded by vultures for years as most people of celebrity are. I like your reference to vampiralistic advertising I dont think what the fans suppose are Princes thoughts or indeed ideas at all but they have been suggested to him, his bisness is that a bisness and if you want to create you need to leave the bisness to others, this is always doomed but then that s also real life one person cannot do everything there isnt enuff time in a day!

his recent lyrics suggesting scallywags as friends lends us to believe that he is just realising this. You said before that an artist under srcutiny cannot be creative or words to that effect. Sometimes an artist who becomes too isolated from the real world also cannot be as creative because the only influences he may have around are false and of the same type. Sometimes an artist needs to remove themselves from that situation and be alone in order to reassess their inner mind and 'find themselves again. It is also good to step back into reality and feel other aspects of the world. Its abit like spending a week at disney and finally getting sick of all the mush and plastic world shoved in your face everywhere you turn. I call it 'all plasticked out!'

whats funny about being surrounded by super sleuth agents on a self-indulgent mission 2 bolster the imaginary magnitude of so-called prophetic art, raping hiz mind of a grounded grip on reality & puffing him up with illusory notions of personal grandeur that he figures must b true, only 4 him 2 discover @ 50 that it iznt,& all the people who hovered about him hiz whole life, directly contributed 2 his unstable mental & emotional state.

let me know when i can start laughing @ spiritual rape & parasitic coersion n2 a delusional world,by people whose main intention was simply 2 get ahead, while we,years later, watch the same thing happening in a web forum, disguised az curious interest, even though its already obvious hiz mind has turned 2 mush from such absurdity, yet we insist it still haz some relevance 2 hiz & our over-all peace and happiness despite the fact that art scrutinized 2 closely, iz stripped of the mystique that made it beautiful in the 1st place, much like his mind has been stripped of the ability 2 reason b4 reacting,no thanks 2 the so-called muzic industry, petty bootlegging yes-people,parasitic workers & fans that should have bought morris day a watch bcoz at least then WE'D ALL KNOW WHAT TIME IT IZ.

thank God he'z still got a heart that doeznt have what it takes 2 shatter the kneecaps of every individual 2 have ever falsely projected guruizm on2 him and numbed him out completely.wives & accountants included.amen.

im sorry chariot love i started this thread as i was genuinely interested in the art and the various symbles that we have seen over the years emerge through his fashion, albums etc

I love the scrutiny of this piece of art whether it was a simple doodle or took years to create, Im not trying to psychobabble about it

It is easy sometimes to pas by the beautiful when upon closer inspection the finer detail emerges and ths is what i have found with this cover. I have possessed it for years, heard al the rumours as people are wont to do but only a few days ago while unwell got the album out and decided to squint at the miniature drawings and was surprised at the depth of this work.

I meant this thread to celebrate the artistry not scrutinise Princes innerself.

You sound embittered maybe with good reason.

peace

I think when any artist does something artistic perhaps they had certain inspirations or things they had thought about for long time that goes into it or simply it can be they came up spontaneously with bunch stuff and gelled it all together sometimes it can generally make a strong staement and it was meant to make the statement it mad or I think sometimes its just the way it gets interpreted I really think artists cant afford to take it all too seriously cause ultimatly whatever the inspiration was deep or spontaneous and creative the thing is different people will always have theor own idea and adapt and filter the artwork/song into their own interpretations. Prince is an actively creative and talented person but hopefully he is grounded enough not to take all the bs too seriously.

in my opinion, the BS should B taken very seriously.this is 2008,a year in which, all over the world, people r being asked 2 reach, and seriously reconsider the way they think, the thingz they do 2 each other, and how their actions affect other people.

fact: at 50,he is still concerned with 'who loves me'. that is the exact same question that people all over the world ask themselves everyday,& rightly so.

toxic thoughts and wrong thoughts and toxic actions and toxic words r very harmful,to the person receiving them and 2 the person doing/saying them.

there iz no more room for bigottry, hatred, jealousy, fear, on this planet, just as there iz no more room left for Prince's work and Private Life to B scrutinized 2 the sad point of no Sacredness remaining at all.

why dont people just create their own art instead of relying on hiz 2 fulfill their every need?

No offense intended but I find parts of your reply a bit strange.

1) if artists wanted to make art only for themselves then they could do that in the privacy of their own living rooms no matter what degree of talent they have. Point is commercial art is for entertainment but that doesn't take away from any sacredness the artist put into it.

Unfortunatly in life sometimes all of us are going to be misunderstood or mispercieved or just viewed in ways that we feel are misconceptions so wtf are we going to do develop some technology to control peoples minds or are we compelled to always explain ourselves to the world.
but any artists that play stadiums, put out commercial cd's,movies etc realise that their material is going to be for general consumption. Im not saying its ok for their material to be attacked but I dont think an attack was going down in this thread. it was just peoples ideas and observations,if art presents itself in a provocative or cryptic way it will probably invite curiosity and people trying to decipher... really what does it matter, for me most of Prince's work is Positive and not destructive but creative and inspiring I think thats what matters mostly.

Prince didnt just get famous last year, his been around for longtimes whats so different about now. Seriously man how is people discussing the artwork of 1999 an attack on him. I dont buy any of the crap that there was symbolism of him being gay etc thats just people taking things too far and their will always be people like that and every famous muscician and bands have had to deal with that type of crap nothing new there.

QuietSeven is MORE than capable of speaking for herself and that is what she did here. She gave her insight just like everyone else did on this thread and yet you judge her words and actions. She isn't a "personal spokesperson" for Prince, but she is entitled to her opinions and beliefs just as you are. But isn't it wrong to bring religion into this because this thread has nothing to do with that. Attacking her because of religion is uncalled for, attacking anyone isn't called for.

She is also an artist, creates music and shares it with others. She speaks truthfully, kindly and lovingly. Besides this whole mess got me down and she was there to help me.

Thank you QuietSeven, you know I appreciate your words.

Thats what Im talkin about!!!! lol

yep theres loads to look at in this picture!

we all take these kinda covers at face value ie we buy the album play the tracks but dont really spend time studying the cover. I knew there'd been loads of stuff posted before about the 666 thing etc but when I looked at this the other day i was surpised by all the tiny drawings, the buildings etc and the use of signs etc

See it was worth posting this ChariotLove as peeps are startin to re-appreciate this old cover.

I think I will start a parade thread after all! or maybe a graphiti bridge one or better still the symble album with all that pyramid symbolism etc cool
