I saw Rick James, The Stone City Band, and the Mary Jane Girls in concert back in 1983 or so. Well Rick came on stage dogging Prince, and the Fans started booing Rick, We would not stop, Rick got pissed and cut the show short still cursing us out for liking Prince. Well apparently rick did that at some other concerts, The word got back to Prince so when Rick and his groups were playing in L.A. Prince showed up during The Mary Jane Girls performance, he has front row seats and after about 3 songs he got up and started dancing and singing, Well the people got with Prince and he went to the corner and a crowd gathered around him, then he left the arena, Rick was Pissed, then when Rick was performing Prince did it again, with the same results, he then had big Chick carry him back stage, Rick wanted to fight but Prince just laughed at him and walked back out and the fans followed.
But it started when Vanity was Rick's date at the American Music Awards, She went with Rick but left with Prince. Prince is a bad boy but I love it. Rick never Got over it. How you gonna get my back when you fronting.

Rick was really something once upon a time, it's sad that he's such a bitter old bitch now. He could never pull honey's like P could, he most definately can't do it now (like P still can).
It's about the music, which nobody is trying to hear from him... It's about the sex appeal - would YOU fuck Rick James??? It's about the fact that P isn't sitting next to him in that ditch he's stuck in... sldtjth theoldfhoietewihrewrnaoiiiniiieriaeiiitni;en;oiehsdlhfoiethioewthewkdkhfihoeaiRick seth Prince Slick Rick suckle it... Yep, I remember the days when Prince was new and opened up for Rick James. Acutally, they really were bad billing as a team. They had two totally different vibes, so I can see how they would have some type of rift.
Rick has ALWAYS had it in for Prince, and you all are right about the audiences really being into Prince, although he was only the opening act. I remember that during the James show, he had this big HUGE replica of a joint come walking out on the stage. Prince didin't do smoke and mirrors, and still killed the show! Rick is jealous, plain and simple. He's jealous of the success that Prince acheived, and of the respect that he still garners. It's like the rivalry between Amadeus and what's his name. The finger pointing at the moon is not the moon...dammit!

Rick Might Be Bitter&Goes Overboard at times but One Damn thing about it Rick could Hang during His Hey Day IMHO."Urban Rapisody" was a Good Album&For Me Better Overall than Prince's stuff of the 90's on a Whole IMHO.I think Prince had Rick on Overall Instrumentation Playing.but the Biggest thing was the Cross Over.Hell I Remember when Rick James was Bigger than Prince&Michael Jackson without Video or Cross-Over Promotion,etc...as far as the Mick Jagger Comment:again that is my point about Prince&Rick Being cut from the same cloth.they both went after the same Rock&Roll Vibe,etc..in Rick's defense He was Blasting Jams Left&Right.Prince didn't really Thrown Down on The Funk on a Full Album until "1999" IMHO.Rick was Dropping the Funk from "Come&Get It" from 78 through"Street Songs" in 81 before Prince caught up with Him on the Groove tip fully IMHO.but going by much of these Posts Nobody but Myself can see alot of things these Cats have in Common.on a SideNote at a Glam Slam Concert in 1994 Prince&The NPG Played some of Rick's "Bustin Out" on Stage.but nobody is gonna mention that? mistermaxxx

Prince is feeling Hella Good right now...
He's got his music...his blessed talent(s)...& STILL can go on tour & sell out. Rick, well, Rick is just known as the "Mary Jane" guy who got real fat in jail... Jealousy comes N many shapes & sizes...& Rick isnt blocked from this. His references of Prince being gay only tells me that HE isnt secure about his manhood, he was the 1 N jail & hey, who knows, maybe he has a litle crush on Prince. &

Maxxx, don't worry about it...I agree with you! Though, I will say that James couldn't sustain his musical growth and prowess like Prince did throughout his career. But you're right, Rick James did indeed ROCK!!

You're right about the cross-over appeal. Rick James was a bigger star than Prince, but the video age was just coming along in the late 70s, early 80s and this is where Prince was able to leave Rick behind. After Michael Jackson broke through the No Blacks on MTV barrier, Prince came in behind MJ as the second black artist to get his videos played on MTV. This made a major difference in how his career went and how Rick's went. Rick had one big hit that crossed over, SuperFreak. Rick James was big, but he got left behind by Prince's appeal to pop audiences with the "Minneapolis sound."

But you're right, Rick James did indeed ROCK!! I too, see both of your points. That is why it irritates me so much to hear Rick always hating on Prince because it is like he feels so inadequate as a musician, performer or whatever that he has to put Prince down. If he knows what he brought to the table in his heyday, why does he have to put Prince down? I respect Rick James cause he really could do his thing, but all that hating on an artist such as Prince, isn't going to fly with me cause anyone with ears can hear Rick ain't ready for that!

I saw that show with rick james and i was just waiting for him to get started on prince. If anyone here had bet in the late 80's early 90's there was a video that rick had where he had on a suite with a hat and boots that was made with the same material. in other words he was dressed like prince. yeah he hates him so much he wants to be him. he should be blessed he's even still alive. with the drugs, the rape and kidnapping, being in jail, and having a stroke. he will never be what prince is because in his younger years he didn't take care of himself and it shows.I don't care how good of a musician he is he will always be remembered to me and rick james the prince hating jail bird. that's sad cause my family's got his albums too and they are awesome!

Btw,Rick has some major plans for 2003...
***A new CD---He reportedly has 25 songs all completed,so it could possibly be a 2-CD set.A few years ago,he completed an acoustic album featuring guest stars like Lenny Kravitz and Rod Stewart. It's likely that some of those songs will make it onto this new,25-track album. The new CD is due in early 2003. ***A reunion tour with Teena Marie---Dates are being lined up right now for an extensive world tour with Teena Marie (he should bring The Mary Jane Girls along too!).There will be dates in Europe as well.
