Jessie or Prince

Does anyone have any hardcore documented proof that it wasn't Jessie Johnson on

guitar with recorded songs of 777-9311 or Get it up.
I have always taken it by

word ofmouth that Prince did everything on the TIME's albums up until there second

to last album. But I have never heard him play that style ever. Even the song

Bambi, Private Joy, and Ronnie talk to Russia are totally different from 777-9311

and Get it UP. Because I too think (if it is prince) it is some of the best

guitar work on any pop song. If anyone can direct be to documented proof (such as

an interview or a statement by Jessie saying it wasn't him please direct me there.)

I recorded a few guitar solos for Morris Day back in 95. Andre Cymone engineered the sessions at his loft. Morris mentioned, among other things, about how it was Prince who recorded the solo to 777 and how he went out of his way to sound like Jesse. It's also mentioned in DMSR by Rick Batts and Alan Leeds has also mentioned this in an interview that during a rehearsal by The Time, P walked in and tossed a cassette of the song to Jesse and said "U play great guitar" AFTER P had recorded the song. Jesse had no idea what P was talking about. Morris also told me that the Jungle Love and My Drawers solos were the only leads Jesse ever recorded while he was with The Time. As far as Get It Up, if anyone knows ANYTHING about P's playing, then it's clear as day that P is playing the lead to Get It Up. That was P's style during that period. That's like saying it's not P playing the lead on Lady Cab Driver. I saw The Controversy tour where The Time opened up for P. When they played Get It Up and Jesse got to the solo, it was totally different. Hardly anything like the recorded version. Jesse's phrasing, his speed, just his style all together, was totally different. It was obvious that it was two different people. It's as obvious as listening to Jesse and Prince sing. Night and day.

Hey Black,

I heard that's Prince on My Drawers from several people and after listening to it over and over again I think that it's Prince and not Jesse. It almost has the same vibe/sound as Extralovable if you listen closely and both were written around the same time.

thanks thumbs up!

although i'd have to disagree with Prince and say Jesse played "great guitar" on his own
and surely has done so since then!
i wonder how many musicians who've worked with Prince would've blossomed more freely if Prince had but given them room to do so, especially back in the day
i don't think we can blame any of them who got out and eventually did

Hey joy, I never said that I didn't think it was P. I know that's P playing on My Drawers. And I don't need to copare it to another song because it was recorded around the same time. That doesn't mean anything either. If u read my post correctly, you'll see that I clearly said that's what Morris told me. Matter of fact, some months ago, over in Ass. Artists forum, I stated that I've always thought it was P on My Drawers instead of Jesse. When another orger questioned me with "Well why would Morris say Jesse's name in the song?" Then I responded that P would want that because people knew Jesse was the guitarist of the group. Same example with the song "The Walk". That's NOT Terry playing bass on that song. It's P. But what does Morris say in the song? "Go on and walk Terry." Just because Terry's face is on the album cover doesn't mean he played bass on that song. Same with Jessse. Morris played drums on some of the tracks on the first and second album. But Morris isn't listed as the drummer of The Time. So joy, I don't need u telling me about how many others have told u what sounds like P. Especially about something I've been knowing for years.

Well, u should know by now. As much as u have obssessed over P and Jesse's playing. Matter of fact, I was shocked to see that u weren't the one who wrote this thread.

Man, the best thing to have done if u played in a band that P was behind was to use that as a stepping stone like Terry and Jimmy and Jesse did. Like Lisa and Wendy to an extent. It could have been P was just fucking with Jesse when he said that. P definately knew Jesse could throw down cuz if he couldn't, he wouldn't have been in The Time in the first place. But P always wanted to record everything anyways. Unless u could bring something to the table that P really liked and he couldn't do it himself, THEN he would want u to cut it. Otherwise, if he could duplicate your feel,...he's gonna record it.

Hey, I'm not attacking you about what you said. I'm just reaffirming the fact that you made about Prince playing everything on all Prince and Prince related albums back in the day.
