Discovering Prince

I think record companies don't have a nack for finding talent. But by suprise they told by Prince's early works that he was going to be phenomenal. My question is how? There's nothing that siggests he would be huge. It wasn't till Contraversey that he displayed any charecteristics of a huge international artist. Do you like For You, Prince, and Dirty Mind and can tell that it's the works of the next James Brown or Jimmi Hendrix.
Working up a purple sweat.

ANd when he finds them, don't make them into a "Prince Production."

I'm probably somewhat off on him, but artists just seems to fade under him and he is waaaaayyyyy too talented for that.

Bein the man and having control is allowing "extensions" of God's gift, i.e. other singers to also have a fingerprint.

..i know, who asked me anyway....I'm sorta pissed that those inside his world have to fit within the realm of his discription.

Don't forget he recorded "For You" all by himself; songs, instruments, backgroundvocals and all, at the tender age of 18. Plus he tought himself how to play those instruments you hear on "For You".
If that isn't talent, then I don't know what is.
It takes a good deal of promotion, a lot of exposure and luck to make it big internationally, no matter how talented a person is.
Talent and stardom doesn't go hand in hand. There is a lot of great talent out there that remains undiscovered and therefore never has the chance to see the light of day. On the flip-side there is lots of mediocre talent that will make it big. (I'd rather not mention any names of the so-called stars that made it big, without any talent whatsoever.)

When the album was finished and ready to be released he was 20. To write all those songs on "For You" he had to be younger, don't you agree?
Many songs on Purple Rain for example, were written long before the album was released.

As I recall, he didn't have all that much time to work on that album. Which is perfectly understandable, I mean a record company wont let a 'nobody' work on his debut album for two years or something lol

You're right, he recorded his first album in record time. But the material that WB listened too, when they decided to sign Prince was written before the album came out. "Soft and wet" for example was written long before the album was recorded and released.

Cinnie

I think by Prince (1979) he showed them what they needed to see: a knack for writing hits.

Funny I saw a copy of Controversy on vinyl last weekend and someone had put on there "first album". Someone had forgot the three before that!

In 1979, I got "Prince," and, "For You," shortly thereafter....honestly, with, "I wanna be your lover," I knew Prince would go all the way...and "For You," only underlined that feeling...I got to Prince as quick as I could to give Him a rose, at the 1999 show.
