Celebration Of Prince's Voice

The main reason I am still a fan of Prince, even after a whole string of albums that could not win me over as a total package, is that he still has one of the most diverse voices in the music world.

And he has been using that voice to get our attention for decades now. He falsetto'd his way into the heart of the ladies and woo'd the fellas by using that rock and roll strained voice.
He made us laugh with his Tricky voice and captured us with that gospel-infused sexy voice.

So, what is your favourite Prince vocal style? Mine is Prince's voice as used on songs like Forever In My Life, where he lets his voice break at times, indeed, the strained gospel voice that tries to break out.

Snap

I like his "normal" singing voice as used throughout much of 1999 and Purple Rain. Sometimes I wish we had several different versions of his songs where he uses a different singing voice in each one. There are certain songs where he sings falsetto that I'd love to hear him sing in a deeper voice.

I love them all but I prefer his natural voice. The voice that you hear on songs like 1999, When Doves Cry, and Raspberry Beret. That was the vocie that grabbed me when I was 4 and it still grabs me today. I love his falsetto too but I didn't when I first heard it. It took me listening to Kiss about 5 times before it sank in that it was really Prince singing the song, even after watching the video. When it's all said and done, give me the "natural" voice anyday of the week!

I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

My favorite of all his "voices"?

I don't think I could pick one.

His voice throughout 1999/Purple Rain feels like home because that's how I first became familiar with him as an artist.

As far as in songs, some of my favorite vocals are in:

Ballad of Dorothy Parker
4ever in my life (I agree on as really good nod )
Little Red Corvette
Moonbeam Levels
Mr. Good-night (I know its not his singing voice, but I dig cool )
Somewhere here on Earth (amazing he can still do falsetto like that)

Far too many to count, actually.

I mean, the fact that he can reach notes that I can't. I don't have the best voice, but I was soprano in concert choir throughout high school. As far as I'm concerned, the fact Prince can surpass my range even though he's a guy... that's just amazing in itself, considering that his voice can go so low.

But all around, my favorite vocal that he has ever done... can be summed up in:

"If eye was ur girlfriend" mushy his vocals are so beautiful here, in fact so beautiful that they've made me cry on occasion. How can anyone have a voice THAT beautiful? mushy
had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

his early- to mid 80s voice was the best.

Also F.U.N.K. was the shit man.

I think I agree with you, if I've understood you right. Like in Sign O The Times where the tone in his voice just makes your heart break and his voice seems on the verge of cracking sometimes?

I also love that kind of sexy nightclub voice he has in songs like Joy in Repetition.

But then I'm partial to a bit of good old screaming too, I'm loving the end bit of The Dance, I've always preferred him in desperate heart break mode than anything else!

You're right though the range is amazing, there's always a 'sound' that's right for your mood at any particular moment...
You might not like the taste but I'm still gonna stick your face in this FUNK

Hmmm, thats hard. He does have such a good range, is that the word. If i didn't know better, I wouldn's say songs like do me baby and peach were made by the same fella.
Okay, I think I like his natural voice the best or when he sings in a deeper voice like When Doves Cry or his part in Beautiful, loved and Blessed. Followed by his falsetto.

its only this year that i have really listened to Prince and i also like all his sounds even the screaming - i think he conveys alot of different emotion/feeling with all of his voices - and i'm sure that's why people love his voice(s)
"C'mon y'all - let me hear you sing, c'mon y'all, shake, c'mon y'all, jump" - Yes Prince -
"London do you feel for me what I feel for you"- yes Prince -
"Can I play my guitar now?" - yes please

I also love the songs where he uses his voice as an instruments, like God (vocal), Solo and Girl (extended version, b-side to America)

I love how he uses his vocal chords to convey emotion without actual words. Or how he bends his voice to turns words into more than just that.

they all pretty much kiss ass. one of the reasons i like him so much too, such a versatile vocalist as well as musician/artist nod. even his munchkin-y regular voice from alot of his rehearsals (screams of passion falloff, but still love )and live shows still get me worship touched.
For all time I am with you, you are with me.

I was SO shocked to hear him speak the first time! Such a horny squealer onstage, such a deep-voiced mf offstage.

I think I flipped out when I heard him actually speak for the first time... in an interview situation or any situation. A few weeks after coming here, I decided to look lurking thru YouTube and came upon one.

I think I might have known that he had this low voice when he speaks, but it still blows me away. Considering all the different voices that come from those vocal chords, that being his natural voice is still mind-blowing.

And of course whenever I get to hear him speak in his songs, like in "Future Baby Mama" and "Mr. Good-night"... I'm just floored mushy

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Depends on the song. I love the falsetto songs like Adore, Pink Chashmere, Scandalous ect. But I also like the lower registers like my all time favorite Electric Intercourse, also Something In The Water....
Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

To echo a few orgers here: in addition to his numerous singing styles, I'm in love with his speaking voice, I love its tone/timbre, and I swear that even if I had never heard him sing, his voice would still have caught my attention.

And then there are the whispers... like at the beginning of Pheromone, among many others. They just make me melt.
[Ok, enough confessions here:)]

I wonder how much work he had to do on his voice. I read somwhere that, like most professional singers I guess, he took singing classes earlier on: I wonder on which singing styles he worked the most - which ones came more naturally and which ones he had perhaps to sweat over.
But we may never know...

Another big puzzle: how does he keep that voice/throat intact in the Minnesota cold?! Russian winters are wreaking havoc on mine every year!
What's his favorite brand of lozenges??

And don't get me started on his breath-taking, mind-blowing, toe-curling screams (endorphine machine) and moans (darling nikki) love2

P has a very unique voice, I often wondered where he developed the technique coz when he was in earlier bands he never sang, as it used to hurt his throat. His voice when he does interviews is unreal, even as a man I find it incredibly sexy, it is the type of voice, that if you have it, you know you can get anything you want. Then again, he does have just have about everything he wants cool
If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.
