Backmasking/hidden messages in Prince's music I love stuff like this, its like the "easter eggs" you find in movies.
Let's discuss this because Prince does have a handful of these. Obvious one is the darling Nikki backwards message or the "jail(chains)" line in Little red corvette. I love finding (out) about hidden things in music. Does anyone want to talk about the ones they know?

There's one in Little Red Corvette?!
But there's one at the beginning of "Baby, I'm a Star." I like girly guys....

Its two words that fall on top of each other and get distorted: A body like yours ought to be in jail/chains and yours is on the verge bla bla bla The baby, I'm a star one was the first I found. I showed it to my brother and he asked if it had to have a parental advisory sticker on it because of that...if only he knew...

Er, what is the Baby I´m a Star one, after 24 yrs I have missed that one P has alot of stuff hidden within the lines of his music, since 2000 he has become very adept to it If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

At the end of Darling Nikki;
“Hello, how are U? I'm fine cuz I know that the Lord is coming soon Coming, coming soon” At the beginning of Baby I’m A Star; "Like what the fuck do they know? {backwards message} All their taste is in their mouth Really, what the fuck do they know? Come on, baby Let's go crazy!" The Beginning of However Much U Want, on Mayte’s album; “Mayte, darling, I'm diggin' your set, but a.. I think we need 2 leave something 4 the babies of the New Power Generation What do U think? Cool, what do U wanna do? However much U want Get up then, boy!” The b-side to America; Girl, at the end of the song has backwards stuff going on; which is Wendy’s voice reciting lines from the song, but stating ‘Boy’ instead of ‘Girl’. New Position; First he spells H.A.P.P.Y. But the background P.U.S.S.Y. [Edited 2/21/08 21:07pm]

Uh, ...I've written several threads on here regarding backmasking. Let me clarify the difference between "backmasking" and something recorded backwards. I could take you with me into a recording studio, sit u in front of a mic and tell you to start talking. All the while, I'm recording you. When you're finished, if I recorded u on analog tape, then I'll just flip the reel of tape over and play it. It'll play your talking in reverse simply cuz I flipped the tape over. It'll mostly likely sound as if you're speaking in another language. If I recorded u on digital equipment, depending on the software, I can hit "auto reverse" and it'll play it backwards. That's a backwards recording. I use that sometimes with recording my guitar solos. Hendrix used to do this as well. It's a cool effect to record a guitar solo and then mix it in backwards. But u have to play it a certain way forwards so it can sound cool when u play it backwards. Now "backmasking" is a totally different thing. Backmasking is when u can say a lyric in English and then when u play it backwards, it says something entirely different. But it's still in English. This isn't easy to do. I've done it once when I sang a lyric from one of my songs. Foward I sang something like "She has no soul because she buried her heart in a hole." When u play that backwards u hear me clearly sing "Sad Izabella" and then parts of it sounds like "You should know the sound of my voice." Anyway, many famous bands have done this. I won't get into it on this thread cuz it's about Prince usage of this. He's done it alot. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

On the beginning of Paisley Park, when P, Lisa and Wendy sing the words Paisley Park, when played backwards it says God is love. There are some crazier ones that I have mentioned on here before. Some folks say they can hear it. Others say they can't. There is one during the intro of Let's Go Crazy. When P says "there's something else....the afterworld." Play that backwards and P says "When I was a fa%#ot, there was a girl named Stella." The scariest one that I have ever heard from P was actually on The Time's second album. It's at the end of the song "onedayi'mgonnabesomebody". U hear Morris and Prince say "We Don't Like New Wave" and then a bunch of laughter. When u play that in reverse, u hear crazy sounding noise like gobblins and then P's voice only saying "here we come for u". P also has something on the song 1999 during the lyric "say say 2000 zero zero party over oops out of time." U know it's something there because that lyric read foward doesn't make any sense. But I can't really make out what is completly said when that's played backwards. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

But I can't really make out what is completly said when that's played backwards. but how could you predict the outcome of that? that would be extremely hard or next to impossible. say, i was recording a song and i wanted some backmasking line on it. now i decide the "hidden" message should say "i'm wearing prince's panties" how do you find the right "forward" sequence of words/syllables to get that message, audibly on the recording when played in reverse? if you'd simply flip the line "i'm wearing prince's panties" it would be at the most some inaudible gibberish. so how do yo come up with the phonetics that make an entire line work on 2 different levels when played either forward or backward? i always figured this was more coincidence than anything else. especially since with backmasked lyrics the 'original' line is always very clear and apart from possibly being a rather weird line or choice of words it fits the record smoothly. then the "backmasked" version of that line, that will say "kiss me satan" or something like that, usually sounds very slurred, dragging, sketchy etc. which makes me think "well yeah ok, if i play 4 prince albums backwards, i'm sure to pick up something that sounds like 'i'm the dark lord of the park' or something like that". so how do they do it? and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Maybe all of this ties in with Princes weird one liners in his songs. "heavy feather flick a nipple" not saying this is one of the backwards messages or backmasking. I'm just saying there are alot of lines that we have thought were cool and enjoyed trying to figure out the meaning. What is this has been what was going on all along? Premeditated. I dont doubt it. All he had to do was study it from a group that had been doing it all along. It cant be difficult to get the info. "......I gotta' lotta' butta' 2 go"

That's why I said it's hard. And it's a lot of trial and error. It's never really been taken seriously, the backmasking, largely cuz I think it makes many uncomfortable to believe that their have been folks who has done it. So they just write it off as a coincidence. I've been hip to this and very intrigued by it ever since I was 9 years old. My first experience with this was when I got hipped to Led Zepp's Stairway To Heaven. They actually played the record and disected it backwards for a good hour on the radio on Halloween night. It scared the shit out of me. But at the same time, I dug it. I've always loved the sound of music played backwards as well. Jimi's backwards guitar solos are just beautiful. Especially the one on the track Are You Experienced. When I was a kid, I adored that. Not knowing fully that it was reversed. It was just the sound that I dug. So I ended up doing it myself. Listen, there are many, many examples of this on websites. That's the difference today compared to when I was a kid. U would hear a rumor about something on a record and u actually had to spin the record with your finger backwards to hear it. Everybody started doing that in the 60's with The Beatles. In the 70's, it was hugely popular. All kinds of bands, popular ones too, were doing it. It became a game to find them. ELO actually titled their album Secret Message based on this. But if you're truly interested, just type in backward messages in music or something similar to that on line and all kinds of websites about this will come up. They'll give u links to play different songs to actually listen to the foward line and then when it's played in reverse. Just listen for yourself and see if it's intentional. I'm sure that a few have been by accident. But many of them, especially when a different backmasked has been repeatedly found in the same song, then that is no accident. Or a certain subject matter is repeated through out the song in a backmask, then it's no accident. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Isten, check out a website called Reverse Speech. It breaks down the questions u brought up. There are books that deals with backmaskings found in music. Like I said, u may be surprised to where u find them. It's not just in Heavy Metal for example. But like I said, go to other sites that have the foward and backward lyric audio from many different songs. Listen and then judge for yourself. But this is something that I've been hipped to since I was a kid. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."
