Party like it's 1999

Did Prince coin this phrase, or were people always saying, "party like it's 1999!"? I find it funny that people still say it today, and wondered if Prince started it.

I think it was Prince - he wrote it way back in '82 or something.....

And what a great once in a lifetime moment it was to play it at a party on NYE 1999 at midnight leading into 2000!

Prince said it first and made it famous. And he made '23 positions in a one night stand' a very famous phrase too. nod

At the time it was released--and even now, but much more so then--a lot of people took issue with using "party" as a verb. I seriously think that's one of the reasons the phrase took root. It would still be catchy without that factor, but I think the novelty of it gave it extra oomph.

well you must 1st undestand...what the significance is of 1999 vs 2000. 2000 years after the death of Christ the world is supposed to end. Now we don't actually know if the year 2000 is 2000 years AD or not...but thats what the song is about

Forgetting about your troubles....we gonna party like there aint no tomorrow

I was dreaming when I wrote this ...forgive me if I go astray. When I woke up this morning this morning was judgement day

http://en.wikipedia.org/w...t_Judgment

it truly is amazing to me that so many of Prince's wordly fans have no earlthly idea on the consistent and beat you over the head religeous messages in songs throughout his career. It is hysterical to me that people think these things began with the Raindbow Children

You know what...it just goes to show you when you write really good timeless classical music...people don't care what your saying...even if you are clearly acknowledging Christ in your songs like I Would Die 4 U

Its truly amazing

To me it represents the ultimate party never to be repeated.

Didn't the hype surrounding Y2K help to coin the phrase?? You may recall panic spreading about what was going to "happen" at midnight on that day.

All references can be linked to finality.
