I think record companies don't have a nack for finding talent. But by suprise they told by Prince's early works that he was going to be phenomenal. My question is how? There's nothing that siggests he would be huge. It wasn't till Contraversey that he displayed any charecteristics of a huge international artist. Do you like For You, Prince, and Dirty Mind and can tell that it's the works of the next James Brown or Jimmi Hendrix.

I think Prince should have a nack for finding talent.


ANd when he finds them, don't make them into a "Prince Production."

I'm probably somewhat off on him, but artists just seems to fade under him and he is waaaaayyyyy too talented for that.


Bein the man and having control is allowing "extensions" of God's gift, i.e. other singers to also have a fingerprint.

It takes a good deal of promotion, a lot of exposure and luck to make it big internationally, no matter how talented a person is.
Talent and stardom doesn't go hand in hand. There is a lot of great talent out there that remains undiscovered and therefore never has the chance to see the light of day. On the flip-side there is lots of mediocre talent that will make it big. (I'd rather not mention any names of the so-called stars that made it big, without any talent whatsoever.)

You're right, he recorded his first album in record time. But the material that WB listened too, when they decided to sign Prince was written before the album came out. "Soft and wet" for example was written long before the album was recorded and released.

Funny I saw a copy of Controversy on vinyl last weekend and someone had put on there "first album". Someone had forgot the three before that!

In 1979, I got "Prince," and, "For You," shortly thereafter....honestly, with, "I wanna be your lover," I knew Prince would go all the way...and "For You," only underlined that feeling...I got to Prince as quick as I could to give Him a rose, at the 1999 show.

Prince was 19. For You was released on April 7th 1978. Prince turned 20 on June 7th 2 months later.
