From all that I read I think they did have a brief fling. But it wasn't serious and he thought she was a bit of an airhead.

I remember reading somewhere, that Appolonia had a boyfriend or husband when they filmed Purple Rain and wasn't interested in Prince. To promote the movie and to make people believe that Prince and Appolonia were an item, she was asked either by Prince or by the Producers , to keep it a secret that she was with someone else
To keep the illusion alive,they didn't even want her to be seen in public with her boyfriend/husband while the movie was promoted.
