Come 2 My House/GCS2000/Newpower Soul What was going on for P and his entourage at the time?
It seems one of the least critiqued P eras, musically speaking.

It seems one of the least critiqued P eras, musically speaking. the best albums r come 2 my house and gcs2000 man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

All three albums are flawed by that tiresome production sound. But, Prince's voice being what it is, I can at least listen to half of NPS.
The One is stunningly beautiful (so expect a reworked/re-recorded version on Prince's next album) Wasted Kisses is interesting. I REALLY like Push It Up and Freaks On This Side.

^ I quite enjoy NPS these days it's never going to win any awards for originality or anything but there are some good tracks on there. Freaks On This Side and Push It Up worked really well live IMO. if you've gotta pay for things that you've done wrong I've gotta big bill coming at the end of the day- Gil Scott Heron

I have to agree. Of all three records, Come 2 My House feels closest to a fully finished article. Of course, I expect this reflects my own preferences in terms of what constitutes a polished finish but Newpower Soul feels more like a collection of ideas from touring/live sessions that weren't properly fleshed out in the studio. I guess this has sometimes given rise to astonishing results but on Newpower Soul the magic touch appears missing except on the hidden bonus track Wasted Kisses. When Prince does deliver the goods on tracks like Come On and The One, it only serves to accentuate to me how poor some of the others are in comparison. That said, I can certainly enjoy this album for what it is rather than what I would have liked it to be. Like others have said, I can play Push It Up, Freaks On This Side and Mad Sex LOUD and find myself pleasantly groovin'. GCS2000 seems somewhat a halfway house between the finesse of Come 2 My House and the hodge podge of ideas that is Newpower Soul. Many of the cuts have a melodic power and strength in terms of feeling like songs (as opposed to jams) but there also appears to be a lack of fine editing in some of the segues and superfluous sampling/jamming. Free and Utopia are excellent joints, however, and worthy of a good Prince release. Much like Emancipation, one can only wonder what a selection of the best of these 3 discs might have produced; I imagine it would be of a much higher quality than the current sum of their parts. As it stands, Come 2 My House is the only real strong release for me whilst the others seemingly remain guilty pleasures. . [Edited 2/17/08 14:34pm]
