Morris Day talks about Prince...

From MTV News:

As the Grammy Awards progressed on Sunday night, one man was making headlines of his own backstage: the Time's Morris Day.

The frontman/lothario, who duetted with Rihanna early in the show, said of the singer: "I think she's a sexy young lady. I have kids as old as her. ... But I enjoyed it. That did not stop me from noticing."

He had a less flattering, although sympathetic, comment about her onstage pouting: "When the groove hits you, you get ugly for a minute. It's like you broke wind."

Since the Time are noted for their cool ("Cool" is also the name of one of their best songs), he talked about how some of today's artists measure up.

"I don't see Kanye as being cool--very talented, but not cool."

Chris Brown? "He's very hyper, but talented. Give him about 10 years and we'll see. There are some cool people out there. I think Snoop is cool. Puffy's cool. It's embodiment — it's gotta be in you. I'm so cool that even when I'm sweating, it's a cold sweat."

After noting how impressed he was with his own group's performance, Day continued: "I don't know if you were able to watch [our set] because you were too busy eating sandwiches and potato chips, but we had a good time," he told reporters with a laugh. "I still do the dance moves every day, I just happened to do it on the Grammy stage tonight."

When asked if he spoke with longtime friend and foil Prince backstage, Day answered, "I asked him, 'How's the family?' ... He didn't say nothing." (Day and Prince are old friends and rivals. Day split from Prince's camp not long after the blockbuster success of 1984's "Purple Rain," but reunited for 1990's "Graffiti Bridge" and the Time have opened for Prince at several shows in recent years.)

Asked if he was going to kick it with Prince backstage, he replied: "Am I interested in kicking him backstage?"

Day also said the Time have a new album done and plan to tour. "That was fun. Where's the sandwich boxes?" he said before leaving the media room.

Morris is something else. That "How's the family?" line is straight from Purple Rain and Graffiti Bridge.

I need to find their performance on Youtube. I missed it.

I don't remember Morris saying "How's the family" in Graffiti Bridge. But I do remember him saying it in Purple Rain.
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Watch the interview. He did not say he wanted to kick him. He asked the question back to the interview to clarify the question.

I just saw the performance on Youtube, by The Time.

They sound good, but their performance was short.

They did have The Time come back and finish performing after Rihanna, as I would have arranged it.

I like how they interrupted Jimmy Jam and gave him his keyboard.

It's good to see Jesse back with them.

Rihanna got too much time onstage, but whatever. Prince fans aside, the audience was going to be more familiar with her than The Time. shrug

He sounds jealous to me confused Otherwise why not just be gracious, and 'how's the family'? Well ok, maybe a joke, but under the circumstances of P's life, I would think, 'not cool'. (If it's been reported accurately anyway).

Rihanna should have kept her ass at home and let the time do their thing. I liked the performance, but I would have loved it if she wasn't on stage. Some old/new combos DO work at the grammy's but this one should have been given the heve-ho early on.

I agree, with you. Rihanna doesn't mix, with the Time. It was funny to see her do their dance moves, though.

What I'm trying to figure out is the Morris Day/Prince thing. It's like in terms of looks, they're two sides of the same coin. They have the suit with the shades and permed hair.

I've always sort of wondered. Did Prince invent Morris? Prince was The Time, musically on two of their albums. Prince, also, had substantial involvement on one of my favorite Time albums "Pandemonium". The demo done by Prince for "Chocolate" was kept and modified a little but...damn! Has anyone ever heard the "Chocolate" demo? Most of the things you hear Morris say were said by Prince, in the demo.

I guess Morris did come up with his attitude and style, but it, still, makes me wonder.

Mor-ris Day is Prince's alter ego just as much as Camille is...nod

YE-ASSSSS!

Morris has made a living off of it, and that's cool...but, ultimately, he's
a puppet and Prince is the puppetmaster.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

EXACTLY!! Morris was interviewed by Tavis Smiley a few years back, and Morris was not a self absorbed as he is when the music plays and the stages lights come on. Morris is quite subdued during the interview...he's still cool (white shoes and all..), but he's not as wise cracking or AS playful. He and P both play up to the stage, but Morris is a bit more dramatic.

I've heard that version. Funny thing is that when they performed this song on Arsenio Hall, they (Morris, and The Time), laid claim to have written the song.

Rhianna should have done a separate set - the collab with The Time just didn't work at all! In fact I found it painful when she came on and spoilt it - in fact I was heard shouting 'get off the stage bitch!' by my husband! I like Rhianna (except for that bloody umberella song chair ) but it just didn't work at all.

A better collab would have been Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys and leave the solo set to The Time.

I enjoyed the Beyonce and Tina Turner set - that was cool, but then I love 'Brave Mary'.
I'm not stopping. I haven't even taken my coat off

lol They were trying to redo the Prince Beyonce shtick and failed, IMO. It was an Okay performance, but they needed to balance out performance and not just have Rhianna with the Time as her backing band. rolleyes

Rihanna definitely shouldn't have been there. So she's the hot chart star at the moment, she should have had her own set if they were going to give her more stage time than The Time when on together. I'd have preferred a medley of 3 or 4 songs instead of just Jungle Love again.

I liked it when Rihanna shouted Chili Sauce - I bet she had to be told to say it and had no idea why.

I enjoyed the performance... And y'all should be thankful that The Time were even asked to join Rihanna... SHE is the top bill right now (sad as that is)... I'm sure everyone except Prince fans were like "what the hell"?? I love the band to death but are they really any more relevant than a group like The Jets or Poison or any other skilled 80s band with a hit 2 decades ago?
