Every version I heard seems to be missing the intro; it seems to start mid-sentence of the "Another life goes 2 the winner"-bridge.

The breakdown that leads to the first verse is still very, very kewl to my ears. That thump in the beat. The freaky screaming. The freaky beat. The freaky "Oonga"-voice samples. The freaky synths.
And then those lyrics.

And that leads the way to put a focus on what I like best about this song; Prince's use of his voice. He uses a deep voice for the bridge, he uses a sexy, broken, hoarse voice for the verses and a mellow background voice for the chorus.

The voice he uses for the verses is probably one of the best voices he uses on songs. It's luring, sexy. It's gospel-funk. To me one of his best exercises in combining gospel and sexiness.

It pales The Rainbow Children, which was just totally uncool, vocally AND lyrically.

Studio cut. Organs..usual 1988 Prince drums. Has some weird cartoony bass going through and Prince screamin BABY!

Don't forget the hoong, hoong, hoonga

falloff

What is that? Prince was so experimental..it sounded like a instrument within itself lol.! Yeah my version is with the Another Life...too. Just like the incomplete heaven intro.

it took me a while 2 get in2 this song. I didnt understand what all the BABY! BABY! Was there for..like a sample of another Prince jam we never heard.

Was it live or recorded?

It was recorded at Sunset Sound during the Los Angeles Lovesexy tour stop which was around November of 1988 I believe.

On the morning following the tracking session, the first minute of the two inch tape of the recording of Cookie Jar was accidentally striped with 'tones' by the second engineer at Sunset Sound. Tones are recorded at the beginning of analog tapes as part of a calibration process for the tape machine and it wiped the first minute of the song. That's why all copies have the first minute missing. It's on the original tape!

It had that "taped demo feel" to it..Plus it's stripped. Still, it's "lightness" is good for it.

Mr. Nelson's original vocals are great. I would not want to change the vocal-track at all (nor the organ).

That moment--of the vocals--cannot be recreated--should not be--even the "rap" or spoken lyrics.

Unlike "Rave", he would have to add more instruments--more guitar.

the reason the intro is missing is cause it was accidently erased from the master tapes of it

The percussion (wood block type stuff),organ, and the echo make it sound similar to the time he put down the Martika tracks to me.(and batman stuff)
extra lovable sounds very 1999 to me, and Rebirth has that SOTT percussion and very minimal non commercial arrangement.

To my ears SOTT's sound was not commercially pop like the new jack swing style (even if both are electronic and minimal)... I think it had no swing... it was more coffee less cream... that's why SOTT didn't do too well with the top 40 crowd. That's why people like the more ear candy sound of the live arrangements of many of the SOTT songs better. I think Prince was experimenting with stripping away the musical techniques that make a pop song accessible and bringing up the bare beats and percussion accents in a very artistic but harsh way.

Yes songs like "It" "Play In The Sunshine" "SOTT" and "Hot Thing" had a very in your face raw beauty about it. That's why it's the classic it is today

This one sounds like a track Levi had imput into. He seemed to have helped create that wierd, cheesy, casio tinny sound that Prince was playing with back then. Never really worked.

It also seems to me that this song inspired or influenced "Return of the Bump Squad." They have some similarities in their sound.

No way are those two better than "Cookie Jar." Even if they are, that's not the point. Did you consider all the songs that are better than "Arms of Orion" before you started a thread on it? razz
