CNN just played P's music in the background???

What's the deal? I guess they called him up before they played it.....
It was on Morning Express with Robin Meade this morning arounnd 10:00am ET.
I'm confused.....It was from from Planet Earth....."I know you're in a hurry baby" that one..... it was cool but I thought that's against the rules these days.????? I guess it applies where it applies....

As long as they pay for its use it is legal. What I wonder about is using prince songs in radio adds mostly for radio stations. Even shows like Rush use prince songs as bumpers from time to time.

Same goes for when someone sings a song on tv. They have to pay to use it. But as far as I know in most cases they do not need permission. And exception might be a performance show like American Idol or the Grammies.

I watch Morning Express every morning (for the past 4 years) and they have always played Prince music. I have heard Lolita, Fury, Black Sweat, Cream, Musicology, and a few others. They list the songs they play for the day or week on there website...so it must be OK to play it because I have seen Prince listed.

What a great morning show ... PLUS Robin is off the chain.

well, there is a "fair use" clause
but not that the one-who-must-not-be-named would know anything about that now, would he?

Actually I did some work for CNN [a freelance gig], and as I wanted to start my package on the glitz and glamour of oil-wealthy Moscow with some notes from 'The Glamorous Life', I was told by the local bureau chief that we don't need any rights if we are using 30 seconds or less and fonting the name or verbally mentioning it in the track - it's called fair use and is considered a quotation by the Russian copyright law.

The response I got from Atlanta was a little different: "Music can be a complete nightmare, usually we have to secure rights and it's so problematic and expensive that we don't bother." - although they did know about the 30 sec rule.

In the end I didn't get my GL music for my piece. But I kept going on so much about Prince songs while I was there, I'm starting to wonder about Doegx's comment 'They must be fans'!.. Who knows, maybe I've converted some:)..

I usually watch CNN, in the afternoon, if I watch tv at all, I haven't heard this recently, althought I do remember when they cancelled, "Cinnamon Girl."
