SoulAlive said: I remember in 1985,I saw on our local newschannel that fans were literally camping out several days before tickets went on sale! This was for the 'Purple Rain' tour. They had sleeping bags, lounge chairs, picnic baskets, etc. It was crazy! Back in the day,you were allowed to do this.It was basically first come, first serve. Then,in the late 80s or early 90s,they tried to discourage fans from doing this. They came up with "wristband procedure",in which everyone gets a wristband with a number. An hour before tix go on sale,a number is called and the person with that number is the first in line.A new line is created. It's probably a more fair way of doing things, but I prefer the old way, when it was first come, first serve.
I missed this tour, unfortunately, but I know it would have really crazy trying to get tickets.Prince was the hottest artist on the planet, during that time. i hate that wristband procedure as well man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81 | |

Me and a couple of friends of mine waited out all night long for Purple Rain tickets way back in 1985 (way before the internet so you had to wait in line to buy tix). From 7:00 in the evening until 10:00 AM the next morning when the box office oppened.
What sucked was that all the tickets sold out in about 20 minutes, way before we reached the front of the line, in fact we didn't even make it into the store. I knew something was wrong when the line stopped moving and a bunch of Sheriff cars showed up. Six damn shows at the Cow Palace (holds about 20,000) in SF sold out in less than 20 minutes. However, this story does have a happy ending, like a week later they put some more seats on sale behind the stage ond we got some. Of course we moved around up front and had a great time. Good thread. I have waaay too many memories to post on here about this. There are a few that stand out but this is definately my fave. Some on here knows that I'm in the footage of the premire at Mann's Chinese Theatre for the Purple Rain film. I'm on the Special Edition Purple Rain dvd. Anyways, I had to spend the night in front of the Mann's to get my ticket. It was complete bedlam. The line looped around this huge ass block TWICE before tickets went on sale. Everybody was trying to get in because if u had a ticket to the premire, that meant that u got to sit with the whole cast from the film and other celebs that showed up. Anyways, I was smart and got there hella early. Around 11 oclock the night before.Around 7 or 8 that next morning, with hundreds and hundreds of people all jammed up in front of the box office, waiting for it to open, this news team for Ch 5 came out to cover it. The reporter came straight to me I think for two reasons; One because I was third in line and way up in the front and two because of the way I looked. I had this white headband on (the same one I wore to the premire) ala Hendrix/Dez and my hair was stacked to the sky. The reporter asked me why on earth would I want to spend the night to see a movie when I could have easily waited untill it was officially released that Friday. I said some shit like cuz I didn't WANT to wait untill Friday when I could see it a day sooner. Later that day, while we were STILL in line, it was shown on t.v. where my mother and some of my friends saw me. This is definately the short version because it was crazy as hell. Not just the two day journey of getting the ticket to the premire but at the premire as well. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

I had already seen P once on the Controversy tour and twice on the 1999 tour. I ended up seeing the Purple Rain tour 4 nights! 3 times at The Forum in L.A. and once at Long Beach Arena. For the first two nights at the Forum, friends of mine and myself went down and bought tickets spending the night at The Forum's parking lot. It was the coldest night of the year and the wind was blowing hard. Hundreds of others were all out there too. The wristband system was standard back then, especially. I was lucky and was able to buy two tickets for the first two nights at once. Back to back. The other two nights at The Forum and Long Beach, I bought the tickets at Music Plus. Again having to spend the night. The Purple Rain tour was the only tour where I had to spend the night for a Prince show. I've had to spend the night for other artists such as Van Halen and KISS but Purple Rain tour was such a hot ticket that it was very cool I was able to see him 4 times on that tour. And on 3 of the showsat The Forum, I had floor seats. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

i remember back in 1988 going down 2 madison square garden waiting online with others 4 the lovesexy tour. people bringing their boom boxers playing prince's music, all of us singing and getting anxious 4 the doors 2 open so we could get out tickets. back then also, those that were in line with u developed a bond and trust. if someone was thirsty they asked u if u wanted something and u held their place in line while they got everyone a snack. so i'm asking if anyone has a story about standing in line 2 get tickets 4 prince tickets and do u miss those days? FUCK THAT! I stood in line for 21/2 HOURS outside of First Avenue for the Prince afterparty wrapped all around the club to across the street.. In the burning HOT SUN might I add! Spent the night at Paramount in like 90' to see Arsenio. Crazy mob scene, almost turned into a riot by dawn. Cool 1 time experience. Next day, got the tickets, walked home and ran directly into Yo Yo w/ a photographer taking pics on the street. Amazon for real flirt. In line heard the opening baseline to Diamonds and Pearls during soundcheck. Sat w/ a gang of celebs for the show. Miss it? Nah. I'd move smarter. Concrete is hard on your back.
