Circle Of Amour

What was the inspiration behind this wonderful beautiful song? I had always wondered was it made up, or was it inspired by a tale or movie...

I read an article in a music mag where Oddie was professing his love for Prince. Said something like "Circle of Amour brought tears to his eyes..." and he was trying to get all his friends to listen to The Truth 'cos he thought it was so great. Said he's been a fan since Dirty Mind.

"Circle Of Amour", according to UPTOWN magazine, is a piece of narrative storytelling, recounting how four friends from Prince's Central High School form a sex circle.

Interestingly, it also says that the inspiration for the song "Dionne" was a girl who lives in London.

what a beautiful,puzzling song. i love it.
ok, don't quote me on this.
circle of amour reminds me of two things: first, the witches of eastwick, that book by john updike. maybe prince is casting himself as the devil in this one. i just imagine four school friends involved in some sort of secretive sorcery, or experimentation with boys, adolescence, maturity, and..yep, sex too ("four hands in the place where the V connected...circle of sex").
second, i can't help thinking of vanity (denise matthews)when i hear the name denise ("she was the wild one, she was the beast"). wonder if the song was inspired by a story she once told prince when they were steady...hey don't quote me on this!! just thoughts.

Yeah this song had me mesmorized the first time I listened to it and even now. I think the way it is written is so clever and the simplicity of it hypnotizes me. I love the way Prince can take lyrics and put them in a way that evokes so many emotions. This is definitely one of my faves.

i saw that bill odie article too, i found it more than a little disturbing that someone who is a professional birdwatcher could be so into Prince...the mind boggles.

I would have to agree with him though. It is a really great song. He made a good choice of albums too, including dirty mind and the family. The Family album was really good, why prince didn't use the material himself in '85 is bizarre.
