VIDEO?!?!?!?!!?
What video!?!?!?!

Prince relased a Lovesexy Tour video in Europe.

You can still buy the Lovesexy video perfectly legitimately in Europe (it's available at amazon.co.uk). Don't know whether it would play on a US video player though.

No way was it cheesy. It was audacious and fun. Maybe you had to be there in person to really feel what that whole band was like; the video can't possibly capture the whole spectacle of it--particularly, Roy Bennett's amazing lighting job. It was amazing.

The costumes don't really stand out to me as any less or more odd than any other Prince era. He's always been a kook, but Lovesexy was a celebration of the oddities in all of us.

I always thought that myself. Especially during Sheila's drum solo, the way it was filmed you can't tell that her drumkit was spinning around and sending beams of light into the audience.

From the medleys, to the skits, to the staging. The whole thing looked like and off, off, off broadway play.

I'm not saying I didn't like it, but I see why he has a tough time selling this to American Audiences.

you are the only one... lol
hey i was there in 1988 and it is still the best concert i have ever been to, bar none. Princey Poo had me wrapped around his finger.

For me, the Lovesexy tour is a good tour just for the scope of music that it covers. Many songs that are played are songs that I would have picked for such a tour. Plus with another posting about Lovesexy (the bad X trip) that I read recently, it lends more to being a story about good and evil. 20 years older myself, though, I do find the predicative nature of Prince's monologue "peculiar" but still lovable. And from the limited footage I've seen, it was definitely ahead of its time.

yeah, great show, but it is kind of cheesy. his attention span is a bit schizo too. wish he'd play more of the songs through instead of ripping through half versions of a lot of them.

I'm not sure if I'm in the right place to answer this question because I wasn't around at the time of this tour.

However, I did find footage of it just recently.

I'm into part 3/5 right now and so far, I'm extremely impressed. I wouldn't go so far as to say "cheesy," but it definitely was well-constructed to tell a lengthy storyline.

I had my doubts I'd get into the music very easily.
But I must say that the performance "Anna Stesia" just blew me away.
I'll post more after I've seen the rest. cool

I saw the Lovesexy tour on the first night in Minnesota. I remember being disappointed cause everything was so choreographed, and I really disliked that all the songs were so abbreviated. I wanted to hear Prince play and improvise. Even the piano segment was not very focused. He played some fast licks and then got up to take cheers from the crowd, then played a snippet of Strange Relationship, more fast licks. It was too show-biz at the expense of being musical, and I really hated that.

On the positive, I remember being blown away by the version of HEAD that they did. Shelia E. was amazing as was Matt Fink, and I LOVED the horn parts. These days, to my surprise since I didn't love the show so much when I saw it, I really like listening to the Lovesxy tour rehearsals. The arrangements are so detailed and original...on the rehearsal tapes it seems like there's a lot more air to actually be able to listen to what's going on. I love the Lovesexy version of Housequake as well.

Was it cheesy? Everything Prince has ever done has always been a bit cheesy, what's kind of amazing about Prince is how he can pull of the most ridiculous/preposterous shit. From what he wears to what he says lyrically. Cheesy isn't even an issue for most Prince fans, I think.

I was at that same show, and I thought it was a very frustrating let-down - a mostly flat, uninvolving performance that only really came to life when he pulled out the Purple Rain hits. I was deeply disappointed - everyone else on the tour (I traveled a good distance as part of a bus package) seemed pretty dissatisfied as well.

Putting aside the fact that I saw it on an apparently off night, I also thought the stage was a little too cluttered, particularly during the first set, and that the medleys didn’t do justice to some of his better songs. Based on the footage and boots that I’ve seen/heard, I think the SOTT tour was far superior – though the fact that I think he was supporting a much strong album in “Sign…” colours my opinion, I guess.

Okay, just finished watching the entire show.

omg

Wow, very impressive. I heard these shows were legendary because they were THAT good. The whole set-up was just amazing and it showed off pretty much all of Prince's abilities.

Now I think I have to chill out for a couple of hours, my mind is still reeling cool

For what it's worth, I had first row floor seats for the North American kick off show in Minneapolis and it was dizzying. All that smoke, loud music and obscure odd stuff --- it was cool. ---- And I was interviewed on the local news with Amy Powell that night. It was a memorable evening, even almost 20 years later.

but to answer to the posting - having just watched the Lovesexy live tour, it does strike me as being like the effects in the original Star Trek series. Be that as it may, it is one thing that many would say his shows are not any more - earnest. We might not understand just exactly all of what he was feeling, but you'd have to be blind not to notice that he was feeling something.

All of the footage I saw was simply amazing. And it's always good to get a little glimpse of what an album's material will be like b4 getting it. I can't say enough how good I felt afterwards. Getting into the Lovesexy album (when I finally get it rolleyes :waiting by mailbox: ) might be easier than originally thought.

Seeing the whole "Bob George" storyline portrayed onstage helped me gain new perspective on it. Might be a little Broadway-ish with how he was dressed, but I didn't care at the time. I just wanted to see where he was going to take it. Then for the next several minutes, he was going on about redemption. When he came up from the floor, playing "Anna Stesia" on piano, couldn't help feeling something there... as if he's begging for forgiveness for falling from grace. The atmosphere completely changed and bordered a little on haunting and creepy, but that's what made it so good.
Thinking about that scene now, I'm still getting chills up my spine. cool
