yeah....

I'd actually much rather he release a failed experiment than an underwhelming, if not actually bad, album.

I really liked Musicology and 3121. However, Planet Earth is the first Prince album that I didn't like at all. Guitar is the jam, but everything else is forgetable.

We are talking about sub-par albums to begin with, but IMO the last three have actually gotten progressively better.

I would actually Consider Musicology to be one of his poorest albums, with the exception of a few choice tracks.

Not as boring as the prince - Chaos and Disorder era...jesus that was harsh. The heavy new jack sampling..the out of control "vs. Warner" era. being young and a P fan..it was hard 4 me 2 defend him in school. Like I had a cousin and every1 was askin me why this and that...

I'm kind of the other way round. Lion of Judah was initially one of my favourites along with Guitar and Somewhere here on Earth, and it stayed at those 3 for a good few months. But recently it has really grown on me and now commands alot more attention. My only criticisms now are F.B.M sounding like its straight from Emancipation, and all the goodnights in the world sounding like a Musicology outtake. And it's 2 tracks too short! - unacceptable really!

I'm not feeling your opinions of 3121 though. That album is not just consistently good, but has more than its fair share of 'stand out' tracks - Black Sweat, Fury, The Dance - closely followed by Lollita, Te amo and Love!

Regarding Musicology however, Savoirfare couldn't have stated it better with his comment..

"...an underwhelming, if not actually bad, album!"

...That is fundamentally what Musicology actually is! There's nothing particularly bad, and as a complete album has got to be one of the most consistent quality wise, throughout! But it dosen't seem to offer just one track that really grabs hold and demands your relentless attention.

I can appreciate why these albums aren't proving too popular, but I don't think they are anywhere near as bad as what everyone makes out!

I think his most boring period for me was from Emancipation to Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic. If I could just forget that period happened, I'd be very happy.

As for the last 3 albums, I loved Musicology when it first came out but once it hit the year mark, I realized that, like Mentalist, the album as a whole is good and consistant but it was missing that song that I could go back to over and over again continually and not just because the song was the single of the moment. 3121 was and still is one of my favorite Prince CD's. It has a "boatload" of stand out songs and it was consistant IMHO with the whole fun vibe that the CD had on it. Planet Earth was like Musicology in that I liked it a lot when it came out but unlike Musicology, I got tired of it quickly. I like the 1st half of the CD much more than the 2nd half. I don't dislike the CD but it's not something that I'm running for. It's in the same category as Come & Chaos & Disorder for me.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

If I was compiling from the last 3 albums, only 3121, Guitar and The Word would survive from your list for me. I could probably squeeze in the acoustic version of Love though.

3121
Guitar
Call My Name
The Word
Fury
Love - Acoustic
The Dance
The 1 U Wanna C
All The Midnights
Cinnamon Girl
Planet Earth
Get On The Boat
RIP sad
