Prince leaving 2 be more "black"

Me and my friend were discussing an issue about Prince getting away from the likes of Lisa & Wendy and stuff because he wanted 2 make his music more 2 a black approach. This is very tru due 2 the peeps he started hanging out with, du u think Wendy & Lisa would really be up in his LP's rappin' with him? Or maybe he just got tired of the same ol' peeps, that's probably the reason y couple of people wanted 2 leave.

no no no um um. This fac is 2 good. The Balck Album came out, The rappin on Grafitti Bridge and rest of albums after that, ADORE! Dont tell me that Wendy & Lisa could've helped cre8 that.

Wendy & Lisa has created good music with him, but the fact stands still, that Prince wanted 2 be back at his roots

Crap on GB, DP and raps were not his roots. However getting back to the chicken grease was a mission. It took the experiences of others influences of PR, ATWIAD and Parade to limber him up for SOTT.

Well ,all I can say is his music was Commercial"Pop" now it's more Jazz and Funk and I like the Black Influence Very Much. I dig the Dark,Smoltery Jazzy Feel his music has to it. It's Awesome and Great. I just like him Wilder. I Never had a problem with the Black Element in his music Ever. I always felt the Funk in his music. Personally, I feel he's Cooler than Ever and to me the Sexiest,Hottest Man in the World. I only am into Him!

Another thing: Prince knew he wasnt in Kansas anymore on the opening nights in Detroit of the PR tour--the dog chant left him wondering "is this Detroit" because he did the the popular woof chant (after G Clinton popularized it) and all he got was blank faces and stares--Greg Tate said Princes face showed something changed and "Mr Prince doesnt know what it is".

the music was never black or white.. just his music... the music he created... On the influences he has stored in his memory, as valued things to remember. From the minds eye to the intruments, to paper, and all around... Not white or black only his experience...

Batdance

I think there are several reasons why Prince felt it was time to move on from Wendy and Lisa.

First, he has said that the Revolution made some of the "coldest" music. Prince had gone as far as he could go with those particular musicians and their "cold" style of music and he was looking for a more down to earth, funkier organic sound.

Second, there was tension in the band from his relationship with Susannah Melvoin.

Third, there was jealousy and resentment in the when Prince began to expand the Revolution and add new members to the band.

Fourth, Prince may have recognized that he had started to rely on Wendy and Lisa too much and he needed to let them go.

Fifth, Prince has always been a solo artist with a band. The Revolution was never meant to be a band the way Aerosmith or the Rolling Stones are a band. The Revolution was a group of hired musicians on the payroll who worked for Prince. Prince is a solo artist. He had to get rid of Wendy and Lisa before his career became too tied to theirs.

The question is, did he do it consciously?

in retrospect, he probably thinks he did do it consciously.

in reality, it was falling apart anyway. W&L were on their way out anyway. they had to be talked into staying a few more months.

Did the commentary recently posted on the NPGMC say that the idea of Prince getting into rap was Warner Bros idea, not Princes'?

i agree...in part. I agree that after SOTT prince wanted to reconnect with his funky roots, but in my opinion offloading wendy & lisa was not connected to this. Parade contained a couple of highly funky cuts, and at the end of the day, prince was the boss. If he wanted to go funky, he would go funky. I think he just likes to change things round every few years (as he has done ever since 1986).

I would hardly call the band he had for the SOTT & lovesexy tours ethnically homogenous, so i really don't think it was about becomming more black. I think the thing that riled prince up was that people said he had become too commercial. Sure he had come a long way since Dirty Mind, but then the Prince album was hardly funk central was it.

I guess Im saying that its too easy to say he does things for this reason or that, it's a number of things that will motivate his actions.

What i would say is that the music he made with the revolution was probably the most focused, solid music he's ever made. 1999 through to SOTT (i know it was solo, but a lot was created with W&L) is considered his peak period, and is so for a good reason.

I think it's obvious that, after a string of "pop" albums like 'PR','ATWIAD' and 'Parade',Prince clearly wanted to move into hardcore funk and jazz. That's the real reason he assembled a new band in late 1986.I mean, there is NO WAY he could have recorded an album like "The Black Album" with The Revolution. And of course,in the 90s,he embraced hip-hop and it would have looked really silly to have Wendy and Lisa rapping on an album with him smile

I think that people should stop trying to put people in corners.

I think that Mr Nelson has shown he is open to all music styles, but his roots are surely in the so-called black music corner. He is partly black, so no wonder. I am very happy he decided to discover the truths and non-truths of black history. It is always good to know where you come from.

And I do not think you can pinpoint his decision to part with Wendy & Lisa on colour AT ALL, as he kept Dr Fink (white AND Jewish too!) in his band. It was a decision based on many issues and no one here had any part in that.

Yep-yep. How the hell can you be "more black" anyway? It's like saying "more woman" or "more tall". I realise that being black is also a culture thing but surely it's that attitude that causes racial tension in the first place. If you make a conscious decision to change yourself in order to fit in with some kind of stereotype you're not being true to yourself and therefore your decision is not your own.

Prince tries to be taller, wearing those high heels.
He must be gay, wearing those high heels.
He msut be black, cuz he got an afro (well he did back in da day).
He must be weird, wearing no underwear.
Uhm...
He must dislike white people, cuz he ditched W&L.
He hates Jewish people, cuz of that Family Name song.
Etc etc.
