Oh ok! I'm not sure what is and isn't in the UK as on Amazon you can still seem to get everything.

I'm still not totally getting it. Do you mean buy the albums that you don't already have even though they are the warner ones?

Sorry its 2:30 am and brain not at its most alert. eek

well in the states the albums that you could usually find easily (1999, purple rain, etc.) are now becoming a rarity. I was in best buy (electronics store that sells music as well) the other day and the only prince cds they had available were 3121 and planet earth. I guess they are slowly becoming out of print.

If the albums are going out of print and you wont be able to get them anymore then you definitely need to have them.

Even though there are illegal ways to still obtain the albums or tracks that you want, NOthing beats the original cds, either for the sound quality or the packaging and booklets etc.

But this is an opinion from someone who still collects from time to time, so I would by all formats of everything purely for the collection and never to really get used!!!! confused

If you go to U.S. Amazon.com, or walmart.com or anything else like that, the Warner Brothers Prince output from For You to Chaos and Disorder is now out of print. If you go to Newbury Comics and try to order Purple Rain or Sign of the Times or Parade, they wont, their computers will tell them that they are "no longer available due to discontinuity." There is a sea change occurring concerning Prince and Warner Brothers for certain.

And all the other Prince related acts are probably OOP, too.

The Time, Vanity 6, Apponlonia 6, Shiela E., etc.

Some are on iTunes though.

In the uk im sure you can get most of the back catalogue,.When P was doing the O2 HMV had a promotion on and every CD with WB (except Gold and Chaos) was on the display.

You can also download the same catalogue (pre 93) on HMV digial and 7 digital i think.

Everything by Prince's associated artists that was issued on the Paisley park label is OOP. The Time albums on Warners are probably OOP in the US.

Most of the retail stores here in Minneapolis that bother to carry Prince CDs are carrying only imports from the UK.

Worth mentioning... this means that the Lovesexy CD that is currently being sold in shops is a tracked version.

That's lame. I'm gonna stop buying CD's soon (vinyl) and my local store is huge so as long as I can find 1999, PR, Batman, Black Album, SOTT on vinyl I'll be fine. I think I've seen all of these at my local place, besides Batman and Black, but I could have easily over looked them.
Maybe we can go to the movies and cry together

This doesn't concern stores with back-up copies or what's already in the bins, this concerns WB not manufacturing, distributing or shipping anything to refill those bins once the supply that is out there is exhausted. Sure, they are as common as dirt right now, but the principle of the matter is that WB is no longer controlling Prince's back-catalog which indicates either Prince has his rights back or someone else is handling WBs distribution. Optimistically this could be an early indicator for forthcoming remasters, of Prince's rumored rerecording of his catalog, or nothing at all. If you are really optimistic, maybe rereleases with outtakes or alternate versions, or severely edited versions to make them JW-worthy. Sometimes when recordings are remastered, the earlier versions sound vastly better than the remasters (like Led Zeppelin for example).

Interestingly enough, most of The Time's CDs are still available with the exception of Pandemonium.

Checking again, some WB Prince titles still give a price for "new" but then states "out of stock, will ship when available" or "will ship within 6 to 11 days" which is the death knell for "will not be shipping at all," which is also Amazon dbl-speak for " we have no answers to give you at the moment but we will keep you on tetherstrings until we have an answer to give you."

Yeah. I'm of the mindset that Warners has killed the slow sellers altogether and will possibly repackage new pressings (as Boris has mentioned in previous threads).

Seems that since the physical CD medium is in dire straights, music labels are trying new packaging runs on a smaller manufacturing scale (to keep that profit margin big vs. iTunes skewed profit pie.

Note previous and current titles by David Bowie, The Rolling Stones and Elvis Costello to name a few. All have had more than a couple "makeovers" in the past few years.

Some labels are trying hard to develop interest in back catalog product. Warners may or may not go this route, but will surely drop many titles into obscurity.

We are certainly seeing the end of an era for 2400kbps sound.
