Did you have your own personal "Gold Experience" back then? I remember being fifteen at the time "The Gold Experience" album started circulating as a prerelease bootleg through the web and other channels. Not only was I hugely impressed by the album back then, but reading Prince's interviews in various magazines like Q or NME convinced my young immature mind that this guy had somekind of high concept spiritual rebirth going on that even I could personally benefit from if I'd apply his example to my own life. Silly me.
Of course, now looking back I realize how frighteningly naive I was - partly because of my volatile age, perhaps, but there was no doubt I wasn't feeling it all. It certainly was a very heavy personal experience which I at the time would mistake for "growth". And I tell you this: I also started getting these weird adrenaline rushes going down my spine when listening to the record through headphones. Spiritual orgasms, that's the best definition for the phenomenon. Altough heaven forbid, I'd immediately begin to search for psychiatric help if I'd start getting "spiritual orgasms" again now at the age of 23. So did you go through the same type of, and being brutally honest, rather embarrassing thing? Confess!

Those "spiritual orgasms" are what make Prince's music the best. I get them all the time when I'm listening to new Prince material (when you don't know what to expect). Some examples: "Strange But True" - the first time I heard that I nearly wet myself!. "Everywhere" - when you hear the opening and think it's going to be a slow ballad, then the drums and horns kick in and that just blew me away the first time I heard it!
You should cherish these moments. Don't just rule them out as being a "teen" thing. This is why Prince is regarded as one of the greatest artists of our time - because he can do those kinds of things ot people!, not because he uses this chord or that guitar string or whatever - that's what people will try and say in the future when he will be studied in universities etc, but in truth, we love him because he gives us more than just pleasing music, he gives us those "spiritual orgasms"! back in the early summer of '95 (many months before the official release), i somehow got my hands on a tape with dolphin, same december, pussy control, billy jack bitch, hate u and gold. i listened to it incessantly, altho' the sound quality was only fair. played it in the car, while walking, while reading, even played it for my friends and told them how great p's yet-to-be-released music was.
i think i know what you mean by spiritual orgasm, especially with "gold". i would almost be in tears (joyful 1s) listening 2 that as the song faded. i wanted to make copies for everyone i knew, relive the experience over and over agian. wanted to scrawl the lyrics on evey bridge i passed by, recite them on my answering machine. could be spritual orgasm...then again, maybe just purple music gettin' me high again. ain't nothin' changed! Most music fans would be content with called these "goosebumps". If that's what you are referring to- yes, I often get these when listening to Prince music for the first time. Or if I hadn't heard a particular great song in a really long time, I'll get them again.
This also happened to me when I listened to the Rhythm Nation album last week.
