Ive just been watching some of 3121-saturday night live..the chaka tribute, the naacp awards

shit for most of 06 the man was on fire supported by (for my money) a genuinly good album

3121-stone cold funk

the word-a modern day classic

love

satisfied..all great great songs adding to the prince canon...

so it was some surprise that planet earth was so ..disposable-apart from FUTURE BABY MAMMA for me none of this album stands up

he should ahve given away 3121 for free in the uk as it sold jackshit and would have reminded audiences why after 30 yrs he is still indespinsible as opposed to fiving the impression hes now disposable

Musicology was the best of the last 3, IMHO. It seemed as if it was just swept-away by that huge tour, and the $$$$ from it.

It's happening!!! Planet Earth is growing on alot of us. Some quicker than others.

I didn't rate it as anything special initially and my opinion didn't change much through all the months up to the end of last year!

This last month though is the opposite, and it is getting played more and more. And each time is better than the last.

I'm also noticing on the org that more that others who also initially dismissed it, are starting warm to it - even if it is just track by track!!!

L4OA mate; you know your music; your Prince; and your comments and opinions are always constructive, educated, and objective, so you can't its not even worth thinking or accusing you, that you hate Planet Earth for the sake of it.

I hope one day that you might feel the same - maybe over the next few years or so!!!

pray

That's the thing about Prince albums. They really do take a while, sometimes a long time to "digest". I said it before, it wasn't until 1998-1999 that I finally realized how brilliant and kickass Parade, Sign O The Times and Lovesexy really is. I've seen in the last year or 2 more and more people talk about how brilliant The Rainbow Children is. Even I have more appreciation for it. I expect in a few years time, the albums released in the last 3 years will get evem more appreciation from the fans too, even if it's just a little bit. It's the cycle that never ends. lol

eek what the fuck???? PARADE should never never be mentioned in the same breath as PE..... neutral

thats just a myth when cats say 'oh it took me a while'

muthafuckers knew parade,SOTT etc was genius on 1st listen same as we all knew PE was ba ba pappa

Back to the OP: I still feel the exact opposite. I still acquaint 3121 with the plastic sound of the latter half of the 90s and beyond, it bored and disappointed me beyond belief, and there's really no reason for me to put the LP on - the 2nd half of the The Dance is good, title track, sure - other than that, nothing else on it for me. Quite the opposite to I feel about Planet Earth.

Same as always: Different strokes.

ditto... I think Planet Earth is a much better album than 3121. Is it his best? Nope. As with all Prince albums, I think about where the material fits into the rest of his catalog. And the first impression left me with the exact feeling you had: it sounds just like the plastic crap he was doing with Emancipation, NPS and Rave... with a vocoder. Aside from the title track, Te Amo Corazon and Fury, I think it's a bullshit album: a regression.

Well that "myth" was real for me in 1986, 1987 and 1988. I had this look on my face with each of those albums after I was through with them confuse I think it had to do with how young I was then, I was 7,8 and 9 those years. When it comes to music, different strokes for different folks, ya know. wink
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I totally agree with you. People here had wanted Prince to go back to his 80's sound for years and when he did with 3121, people were like, "Oh he's going backwards", "There's no growth". Damnit these fans wanted an album like that for like 15 years! There's no satifying the masses.

That was my experience. It doesn't matter to me if you think it's lame or not, it was how I saw it then. I am not offended but you seem to be coming off as arrogant with me over this and it's not that serious. If you aren't trying to be that, then cool but just chill out. lol

I don't expect shit from Prince. He doesn't have shit to prove anymore as far as I'm concerned. At this point, I realize he's going to release some bangers and he's going to release some stinkers. Everything he does is not going to appeal to everyone. On the contrary, you could apply this same argument toward your opinion of Planet Earth. In my opinion, 3121 was too full of R&B cliches and songs that screamed, "For the love of Jehovah, I'm still hip...please play me on the radio" i.e. (Lolita, Incense & Candles, Love, Beautiful Loved & Blessed, The Word, The Dance) and the rest was territory that he's already covered without bringing anything really interesting to the table. The whole build-up of the 3121 era was misleading for me because the house parties seemed to suggest a feeling of spontaneity... (impromptu jam sessions with the likes of Frank McComb, Questlove, etc)... something that would lead to a party record. I was completely let down once I heard the album.

And as you let Future Baby Mama pass as acceptable on Planet Earth, I think it was one of the tracks that ruins the record.... it still sounds like more NPS material with Linn Drums. Linn Drums are definitely appealing but if you dress a $2 street-walkin' whore up in Versace, it doesn't make the lady more than what she already is... A ho in nice clothing!!!! I don't think of it as quality Prince music. It's The One (part 2) with a ghetto chorus and Linn Drums.

I'm shocked because a lot of the people here who usually have like-minded views as mine can't stand Planet Earth. But that's one of the cool things about being a fan of P's music. And as much as I believe some fans of his music need to extend their musical palette beyond Prince in order to get a better appreciation for some of the things he does, I still understand that all opinions are just that: OPINIONS.
