Yeah, you're right Mentalist, it IS what makes him special. While I remember Prince's music as far back as When You Were Mine, as I was only 6 when that came out, I couldn't exactly go out & buy the album. I didn't pay much attention to him until Sign o'the Times came out when I was in the 7th or 8th grade & then not again until Batman. When Diamonds & Pearls came out, I went back & bought all his old stuff. When I went off to college, I began collecting bootlegs. I remember being so excited to see the fabled Black Album on vinyl in one shop in the Village in NYC that I bought it, not having a record player & not noticing that it was available on CD right behind me.
Unfortunately, that shop closed around the same time my excitement in Prince's work began to fade.

Please tell us more!! You've got me wondering what I've missed pre-Controversy days. I've been a fan of Prince since his Purple Rain days, but I do remember songs of his (Sexydancer, Soft & Wet) and didn't realize it was him until much later. Do Me Baby was the first song that I knew as a Prince song. I was around 11 at the time. Unfortunately I've never been to one of his concerts .

I welcome your questions, and am always happy to share my opinion. I realize I'm one of the few "Old Headz" on here that actually experienced Prince from the beginning. But The Org is full of knowledgeable folks that I learn from all the time. I think Prince probably has plenty more tricks up his sleeve that he intends to surprise the world with. With his ever changing spirit, I suspect before it's all said and done, Prince will branch out into some completely different direction than what we would expect from him, and that he'll excel at whatever that may turn out to be. Like become a world-class painter, novelist, or gourmet chef or something. But of course Music is a part of his DNA, so I'm also certain that he'll be turning out more gems that will turn out to be our favorite songs of the future; songs that will touch hearts and get booties shaking. But I don't expect that he'll ever go back to being anything that he already was in the past. I think he's too "Been There, Done That - Got The T-Shirt".

Ok, Prince has always portrayed and eminated an extremely rare sense of confidence strongly evident from even well before he was realising his fame and starting to play a part in an industry where you can express yourself a bit easier! Society all over the world has never openly accepted or been kind to those who dare to be different, or even make the slightest effort to understand or encourage those that attempt to express their own individuallity! Opinions will be formed on pre-conceptions primarily based on image resulting in unfounded judgements enforced - with no regard or consideration that under the clothes, hair, make-up etc. is another human being - a real live person - that has feelings, emotions, a conscience and wants to be loved just the same as anyone! PRINCE however has always has potrayed himself though, to the point that he seems oblivious that this type of behaviour could actually exsist (although I'm sure he's not). Prince has this fantastic faith and belief in himself and seems to follow his instinct and be ruled and persuaded by his own opinion. He has never followed or promoted fashion trends, or wear anything considered pret-a-porter. It seems that the only thought that Prince has on what he will and wont wear is simply "If I like it and I want to wear it, thats the only opinion I need!" His confidence in himself, especially his sexuality, also fuels his expressive nature and flamboyancy. Clothes do not make the man! He dosn't think twice about wearing high heels, lycra hipsters, self support stockings, knee high suede boots, crop tops, frills, lace, crochet etc etc, because to him - at the end of day it just gets taken off to leave the man underneath! No excuses! A very interesting point that may be worth pondering over for a bit is that in nature it is the male of the species that is the colourful and flamboyant as a necessity to attract its mate. Prince has always done as Prince does!
I don't think it is a case of the wild old days because Prince has been evident to us every year. What you have seen is someone continually believe in and convey their own personal sense of style that is relevent to how they feel at that exact time in their life. The more formally suited and understated Prince of today is purely a reflection of a man that is maturing gracefully with age. He's also at the the stage in his life where he really has done it, or worn it all before, Its possibly all out of system now! Life's a Parade! LoveLife, LoveSexy!

PDogz said: wildgoldenhoney said: How long was Prince's opening act? And wow, that must've been amazing to watch, seeing as how it was at the very early part of his career. Obviously had an impact on you since you became a fan from witnessing that performance.
His entire set was about 45 minutes or so of complete mayhem and frenzy! When you first entered the Coliseum, there was no curtain and everything was setup at the front edge of the stage: mic-stands, keyboards, and very few other props. The drum set was in the middle of the stage placed up on a little riser with an oval-shaped sign over it (which was first covered in canvas) that had "PRINCE" spelled out in lights, as in the logo on his 1979 "Prince" album. Everybody was just standing around, jamming to the pre-concert music that they play over the system, smoking joints, grooving, and basically waiting for Rick James. No one really knew who Prince was yet. In fact, I thought we were about to see a band called "Prince For You" (the title of his first album). I didn't know yet that Prince was an individual and not just the name of a band. I thought certainly that no one would be actually named "Prince". Then… BAMM! The lights went out, and you could make out 3 shadowy figures move onto the stage, and then stood with their backs to the audience. The rest of the band took their place, and all you could hear over the sound system was someone speaking in a low, sort of foreboding tone: “Char-lotte! Are you ready for me?” The drum roll hit, the stage lights came up, and Andre, Prince, and Dez turned and all charged about 4 or 5 steps toward the audience – and everybody freaked the Hell out! These guys looked scary as shit! The one in the middle (who I soon learned was Prince) had this spiky hairdo, full make-up, a pink leather motorcycle jacket, panties, black stockings, and pumps! The audience reaction was pure fright! Then Prince reached around to his back, pulled his guitar around to the front, then the whole band started jamming “Sexy Dancer”, and the crowd quickly got over their fright and started rocking to the music and jamming along - all hands were in the air. By the end of that first song, everybody was like: “Oh shit! This guy AIN’T playing!” The party was ON full blast! Their play list consisted of songs from his first two albums, but the song they did that most sticks out in my mind is when they played “Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?”, because Prince was ad-libbing a lot. Like:
Why you wanna treat me so mean? Is it the style of my hair? But what completely blew people away was when they played their encore: “I Wanna Be Your Lover”. Prince went mad, threw off that cool ass pink leather jacket, peeled off his stockings, threw them at the audience, and was running around the stage jamming to the beat with nothing but his guitar, bikini underwear, and high-heeled boots (with little stars on the side). And then once he was done jacking-off the microphone (as if he were giving it head - Prince was a real whore on stage back then), tossed his guitar to the side, reached his hand down into his panties to cover his dick, and pulled his panties all the way down to his knees, gyrating toward the audience with only his hand covering his dick! WTF!!! The audience was going crazy! At the end of his set, Prince said “Damn Charlotte, we’re gonna have to come back here again soon!” And that was it! I was a stoned-cold Prince fan! I started telling people about Prince the next day! At that point, everybody was standing around like they had completely forgot about Rick James. But the roadies came out and moved all of Prince’s stuff off stage, the sign over the drums came apart into two pieces and they removed that. But what really tripped me out was once all of Prince’s equipment was off stage, they removed the backdrop that was behind Prince’s set, and you could see that the stage was actually HUGE and that Prince had only been setup right up at the front. There was a giant curtain hanging behind all of that. After several more moments of getting everything set up, the lights dimmed again, the music started, the curtain opened up, and there you could see that this stage was about a mile wide and a mile deep! This was Rick James’s stage! Rick came out, and The King of Punk Funk reminded you of what you came here for! His show was awesome, but I’ll save it for another thread. But it was interesting to note that many people in the audience started moving out, because at least initially, Rick was no comparison to what we had all just seen out there! Don’t get me wrong, Rick tore the roof off that sucker, but it was hard to stop thinking about what we had just seen Prince do out there. Rick’s show was about 2 hours long, and the Stoned City Band succeeded in funking us to death! The show was actually exhausting! I remember thinking “How in the Hell can they do this every night, and from town to town?” Ahh, the memories!

The best "commercial" reference I've seen out there so far, that really captures the essence of what Prince was up to in those days, is the "Prince - The Hits Collection" DVD. Particularly the "Uptown" and "Dirty Mind" videos that are included in that set, which really give you a good idea at least of how the band looked back then. But none of his really lurid, or truly controversial behavior was ever captured on film (as far as I've seen - not compared with what he was really doing on stage those days). Which actually is very convenient for Prince these days, as he tries to escape his more vulgar (for lack of a better word) past. It also helps his current little campaign that very few of us actual "Eye-witnesses" are still around today to tell the story. And of course, Prince ain't got too much to say about it these days, as we all well know. Suffice it to say, Prince was really doing things back then that got him noticed. But unfortunately, the same things that he did to get noticed also frightened and disturbed a lot of people. He's never been one that's minded taking risks!

I remember thinking “How in the Hell can they do this every night, and from town to town?” Ahh, the memories! this is fab! thx 4 sharing ur memories! prince certainly was a handful back then - excuse the pun! if i had been there i wouldn't have know where 2 look

i remember hearing i wanna b ur lover, seeing the video 4 cool, liking the song controversy but couldn't put a face 2 the singer or group. i knew who Prince was with 1999 and little red corvette but wasn't really feeling it..
then came the summer of 84 and WDC ...case closed ..tho there r times i want 2 his ass 4 some of the things he does ..but hey ..don't we all? man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I have this theory that while I was in my mother's womb, she was listening to Prince on headphones. Those sound signals probably transmitted their way into my unborn fetus and etched itself into my DNA.
In other words, I was born into liking Prince in the same way one is born into a family's religion. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.
