Warners knew that this film was a turkey. They tried to pressure Prince to release it to video only, but he insisted on a theatrical release.Even the Time tried to distance themselves from this film. Before its release, they appeared on 'Video Soul' with Donnie Simpson, where Jesse clearly pointed out "Yes,we appear in the movie, but we didn't write it" At that point,I knew that the film was doomed.

[Edited 1/26/08 6:11am] [Edited 1/26/08 6:13am] Just a quick question here--are we talking *black* women as in their race, or dark-skinned women?

However I haven't watched it at all since the whole Prince vs. the Internet thing exploded If you will, so will I

I can't lie Graffiti Bridge was bad. As a dedicated Prince Fan I would be too embarrassed to watch this with my friends the way I have hyped him up all these years.
Some of the tracks were hot though. "Joy in Repetition" & "The Question of U" come to mind. Regarding his issues with the attractiveness of dark skinned Black women ( I am one by the way) I think it is deeply imbedded in his psyche. I have no problem with people loving who they love and being attracted to who they are attracted to. My problem with him was that it seemed he was consciously leaving dark skinned women out. Just think what an artist of this magnitude could have done with his images (videos, movies, etc.)over the years to celebrate black beauty. How can he speak of God and love and not believe in the beauty that God gave Black women? I have had to learn self-love the hard way and it still kills me to look at the visual representation of his work sometimes. The "Sexy MF" video is a classic example. Look who he chooses as the love interest... Troy Beyer.... and then later on the "Symbol" video collection kicks her to the curb for .....Mayte. Good Lord I forgot how upset I used to get at him.

First of all, the movie ain't as bad as people said... I think it's not worse than Purple Rain... But what I didn't expect is how Graffiti Bridge looks so much like Purple Rain, everything from the scenes to the actors... It's not even a sequel because it doesn't have the same storyline, but all the elements that made Purple Rain a success are there... Shame on you Prince... Obvioulsy Prince tried to repeat the success of Purple Rain and he failed miserably... +++FOr someone like Prince, where at the time a lot of what he was doing was great...this was NOT a great movie. It even earned a Raspberry award. Obviously people other than the fans thought it was terrible. IMO it's more cheesy than anything else. From the acting to the posing to the Sets. Pure velveeta. BTW GB IS and WAS supposed to be a sequel to PR...THAT was the intention by all parties. 3) Didn't know Tevin Campbell was there either +++He's on the Soundtrack with the only hit he had. I wasn't aware of his involvement or that his song (which I heard everywhere) was from that movie. . UTCM also earned razzies including love or money as worst song in a movie and tevin had a few hits outside of round and round..in fact the I'm ready album featured hits that weren't even prince related. man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

watched GB again the other night on the Fuse channel and it was not nearly as bad as remembered. Up 2 the Thieves in the Temple montage thought,
This is actually a decent movie; like PR on a smaller scale (albeit with less captivating songs). It has a plot--again, not as captivating as PR's--but there IS a plot there--and is actually quite a solid flick... Then Thieves in the Temple hit. The song works well in the context of the scene (sort of like WDC in PR) as a sort of "musical exposition" in the plot, i.e. Morris and Jerome r "thieves" threatening the Kid's "love" (Aura). But y this scene shatters the integrity of the movie (and also its continuity with PR) is because the song's per4mance is shown as being isolated from the the movie's action, as in not on stage in front of a crowd. If the scene was re-cut 2 show just shots of Morris, Jerome, and Aura riding 2 the crib in a limo, with Thieves in the Temple in place of the score, then GB's esthetic continuity with Purple Rain would remain unbroken. Per4mances like "Round and Round" and "Melody Cool" do not violate the esthethic continuity, since they take place in front of an audience (albeit in an "xternal" environment)... And yeah, some of the acting is cheesy, but U can say the same about some scenes in PR. Also, Aura is not a strong female lead we can connect 2, as Apples was, and whereas Apples provided a strong counterbalance 2 the character of the Kid, Aura is much 2 similar 2 him 2 b an effective foil. Bottom line is, change three elements of this movie and it would b MILES better: 1) Cast someone other than Ingrid Chavez as Aura, and rewrite Aura as a true-2-life woman à la Apples, rather than a mystical being who speaks in riddles; 2) Omit the isolated TITT per4mance and have the song replace the score in the scene, à la WDC in PR; and 3) Have the "xternal" [outside the club(s)] scenes in 7 Corners and at Grafitti Bridge actually take place outdoors. The xternal scences in PR give the movie a scope and an authenticity that's sorely lacking in the claustrophobic, artifical confines of the GB set. the "Thieves In The Temple" segment is one of the strangest scenes in the movie.Morris and Aura walk right past him,and he smiles at her. Then a few seconds later,he is on the roof, acting all hurt and rejected

...And I have a lot of things to say about the movie First of all, the movie ain't as bad as people said... For years I've heard people over there destroying Graffiti Bridge ... I don't think so... Obvioulsy Prince tried to repeat the success of Purple Rain and he failed miserably... Graffitti Bridge is not a Purple Rain 2 but more 1990's Purple Rain because there's barely no difference.. Actors are just older and music is different... 2) I didn't know that Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis made an appearance in the movie 3) Didn't know Tevin Campbell was there either 4) Again Morris Day steals the show, Prince can't act to save his life 5) They all look old, especially the members of the Time, a bunch of dudes over their 30's who try to stay cool... 6) I've always thought that Thieves In The Temple video was one of the gayest shit I've ever seen, but I guess I was wrong, Tick Tick Bang is even worse... Very disturbing... WTF he was thinking... 7) The best performance is Elephant and Flowers, I really like his black and white outfit and the choroegraphy 8) Again, Prince can't act for shit, bad bad actor... Just plain... 9) Graffiti Bridge reminds me one of the reasons why I wasn't a fan of Prince as a kid : Has he ever fallen in love with a black woman only once in his life ??? Everytime Prince makes a video or a movie, the girlfriend has to be a Latina... I'm not racist but why does he have to choose a latina as her girlfriend... As a black man I've always had a problem with that... Even Michael Jackson put black women in his videos, even when he turned straight white... But most importantly I just hate how the only black female in the movie (who is the only good actress in the movie by the way) is a typical oversexualized, loud and unintelligent black woman ... And the worst scene in the movie is when Jerome decide to take her long coat and put it in the mud ... Since Prince wrote the script, I really wonder what the hell he was thinking... It's not even funny... It reminds me the scene in Purple Rain when Jerome disposes a black woman in an alley trash container... That's just disturbing... It's not even funny and extremly disrespectful... It's not just sexist... It's like if Prince trully wanted to humiliate black women... This guy has some serious issues when it comes black women... 10) It's obvious that by the year 1990, his music started to be more and more influenced by the urban music of the time (hip hop and New Jack swing)... 11) I really understand why the movie failed miserably... Beside the fact that Prince wasn't as popular as he used to be and his music as good... I think black folks were into something else with more substance... The movie was released in 1990... A year after Spike Lee's Do the Right thing, and a year prior Boyz N the Hood... We can see right there a strong generation gap between Prince and the hip hop generation. Graffiti Bridge (just like Purple Rain) portrays a fictionnal and color blind environment where racism and discrimination don't exist... Opposed to a very racial and political oriented movies as Do the right thing and Boyz n hood... It's obvious that Prince showed how disconnected from the black community he was at that time... 12) Graffiti Bridge could have been a relative success if it was released in 1986 when he was still big 7) The best performance is Elephant and Flowers, I really like his black and white outfit and the choroegraphy Yes, I agree I'm not racist but why does he have to choose a latina as her girlfriend... As a black man I've always had a problem with that... Even Michael Jackson put black women in his videos, even when he turned straight white... not every video has a latina, but its his preference I really dont think prince humilated "black" women.....its just acting, its just a movie And that latina character in the movie is not even hot by the way... his choice Graffiti Bridge (just like Purple Rain) portrays a fictionnal and color blind environment where racism and discrimination don't exist...hasnt prince always been this way?? It's obvious that Prince showed how disconnected from the black community he was at that time... Its a musical.....how much substance do you want?? Yes, it wasnt really, good.....but no once ever said he was a good actor... He knows where he needs to be.....making music Say it's just a dream...
U open up ur eyes and come 2 realize u simply imagined this So u lean over and give her a kiss Here on earth, here on earth, with u it's not so bad Here on earth, here on earth eye don't feel so sad Stay right here

blackguitaristz said: As far as Krazie's comments on P and black women; His points are valid. Very. I've spoke on this several times on here in various threads. Me being a black cat who has dated black, white, latin and oriental women in my life do think P has an issue with black women. Always have. He has shown this MANY times, I feel. In his lyrics and visually. I know Vanity and Susan, although they have some other things in their blood, they are essentially, black women. Jill Jones, although bi-racial, is black. That's what she considers herself. My opinion is that P is and always has been color struck. I don't trip off of anyone who prefers a certain race to fuck with. That's their biz. BUT Prince as an artist and as a BLACK artist, he has to be sensitive to the shit that he does regarding black women. And he hasn't been. His lyrics to Ice Cream Castles says it all where he's coming from. Not cuz he's talking about inter racial love. So what? But it's the shit he says about black girls tripping cuz he's into a white girl. He refers to them as "mad sistas, why can't they realize?" That's kinda deep. While I was recording with Morris, he mentioned something about Ice Cream Catles and I said that I always THISliked the music and melody to the song. Which is true. Morris himself said he wasn't too keen on singing that line refering to black women. But P wouldn't change it. See Rick James dated all races of women too BUT Rick always represented when it came to black women. Because he was aware of not alienating black women. He didn't want them to feel slighted. Where I feel P went out of his way to do that. Especially in the 80's. Many black women turned on P after UTCM. That was the second leading lady to star as his love interest that was non black. Then again in this whack ass movie with Ingrid. His message is clear. Sure, I know Vanity was to star in PR but he could have easily got another hot looking black woman that resembled Vanity if he REALLY wanted to. Whatever. THIS IS A TASELESS MOVIE.I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY WOULD BILLY LEAVE THE CLUB WITH PRINCE AND MORRIS WHEN THEY DONT EVEN GET ALONG OR KNOWN ANYTHING ABOUT RUNNING A CLUB.SECONDLY,THEY WERE TOO MANY SCENCE THAT BORDERS ON RAPING INGRID THAT WERTE QUESTIONABLE FOR ME.

I liked the film because I viewed it as a musical and it is not as bad as what I heard people say about it. The music was good, and the story line made sense to me. I think musicals are meant to showcase musical artists abilities and the film does it quite well. Prince has to be given credit for what he has produced and I have always viewed him as a person that likes to do it all and his ambition has got to be admired.
My comment about the race of the people in the casts of the movies, I don't think any of it is intentional, he chose whoever moved him at the time. Prince likes who he likes just like you or I. I don't think GB should be compared to PR because they are different writers/producers are they not? Correct me if I am wrong. I agree with what was said previously about just sitting down to enjoying the film, laugh, cry, whatever! I think Under a Cherry Moon was fun, and to me it look like a blast to make. I liked it because it reminded me of the old flicks, and I like the innocense of Prince that comes across the screen, he is like a child in an adult body that just wants to have fun in this life. I can relate to that because if a person has to grow up fast, then a child like innocence surfaces throughout your life. Did anyone else get that? And that is not to say Prince is child like in intelligence, far from it. Far ahead of his time from when he was in school; he saw a vision that he made happen really fast...
