I actually liked GB, I think Prince is attracted to women that look like HIM. He never admitted to being Black back in the day, when someone asked him what color he was he would say he was "colorless".

TGRES would be the one where he romances the girl, impregnates her, turns his back to her and allows her to fall away from him, right? Robin Power wrote a looong, painfully detailed thread here last year where she directly addressed the issue. I ain't about to dig up that hot mess! In the end, It's not about questioning his personal preferences which is no one's business. It isn't even about other races of women. What Krazie and BG are talking about is how his being color-struck, (a dynamic within our community), expresses itself in his work. It's something that has affected every post slavery generation to various degrees. Here's a link with a quick read if you would like to familiarize yourself with this syndrome. http://www.npr.org/blogs/..._only.html I don't want to get this moved to P&R so I'll take a moment to comment on Grafitti Bridge, the movie,.. I've watched the movie several times because I really wanted to get where Prince was trying to go with it. As near as I can figure, its a highly stylized, or to use Vainandy's term "artsy-fartsy", rock opera type of film where the main theme is that the Kid becomes increasingly angry and discouraged in his fight against worldliness as represented by Morris and his gang. In the midst of his despair an angel appears and through her loving intervention and eventual demise manages to help the Kid find redemption and bring about reconcilliation of the warring parties. However, close ups of Prince's lovely eyes and a great soundtrack wasn't enough to salvage a film that suffered from a lack of professional acting and directing, a convoluted script and cartoonish sets. I still don't think it's as bad as people say though and I like GB despite the flaws. I've seen supposedly professional film makers do worse . Besides, I think the overall message of the movie is a good one. interesting post, I have just read the link as well, but i think from growing up in europe, it is very difficult to understand exactly the deepness that is felt in america on this topic, I personally have many friends from direct african accent and many other cultures as well and naturally the discussions often come up about colour and racism, not to mention religion, but i do think, that Prince expresses neutrality, coz if he didnt, i would definately not be a fan of him I agree it can be difficult for others to understand but not impossible, (I've got high expectations of you, Whit) I know you get it. Many of us have no issues with loving people of other races and that's a good thing. What we as a people in this are still working on is loving ourselves and one another as well. There's a term we often apply to it called "the white man's ice is colder". Ever heard that term? Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

I posted a link that I hope people will check out to get a better understanding of what we're talking about. It's an uneasy topic because it's kind of a dirty little open secret that we normally only discuss amongst ourselves but I think it's a good topic for discussion where his art is concerned. Maybe people just want more threads about his shoe size or his rear end? i enjoyed the article.. and that little tid bit on Spike Lee. and his movie.. i couldnt stand that movie cause he didnt write more of a solution in the movie to solve the contention.. yeah, the end.. 'Wake Up' .. that's it?the last 10 minutes of the movie .. wake up. we already know the problem (with lighter n darker), it's gonna take more than just 'wake up' for some folks as you can see after 20 years later.. the problem still exists..

As far as his treatment of black women, jealousy It's just a fact that P's been waiting his whole life to wake up Chaka Khan.

Yeah, I loved School Daze although the ending was overly simplistic. Spike called Prince out several years ago on the subject and rightfully so. To his credit, Prince stepped up and had a serious dialogue with him. That was good to see. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

I don't think it was that bad, mainly because I usually get what Prince is trying to say even when he says it sideways. Being attracted to women who look like him could be a factor, but the two ideas are not mutually exclusive. Back in the day the brotha did sit on the fence for a minute. Besides, I think the overall message of the movie is a good one. That is an excellent discription and how I see it. He wanted to increase and further his spiritual message (batman interupted Lovesexy's religious overtones!) and not not the sexual one that he was getting renowned for which is why he used the Time and George Clinton to take the more raunchy/sleazy side away! The only song that Prince does that refers to sex is Tick, tick bang! (and what a song to choose) but its only in retaliation to The time hoping that it will beat the Time at their own game. The film as 'a film fit for Cinema release' is not good at all. How Prince ever thought that either A. It would have the same impact/appeal as Purple Rain, or B. would appeal to an audience that wasn't already a fan of his music or understood where his beliefs were rooted is beyond me! Also the styling looked totally budget. Purple Rain to Graffiti Bridge suffers the same image crossover mistake Tim Burton did with Batman and Batman Returns. BR has so many blatant studio scenes that alot of what made the first so brilliant was lost! A trend that cinema rejected very quickly. As the film wasn't released in the cinema here I don't have the experience of feeling a shared disapointment or whatever with other cinema goers. I did get the vhs on the day of release though, and after watching it felt that it wasn't so much a feature film but more of a video for the album, with some extra quirky, cheesy, funny and just plain crap little links to join one video to the next. And that is all I will ever see it as, and if you do too, you will enjoy it alot more than if you would as a proper feature film! It's a shame that 3 chains o gold got scrapped as a film project and DID end up just a collection of album videos. Not sure if it woulda been any better, but would have liked to have seen it none the less! Life's a Parade! LoveLife, LoveSexy!

On the race subject, I can't say that it has ever jumped out at me to the level that is discussed here, but personally for Prince there is a trend in the types of girls he goes for!!!
But that is personal taste or how his chemistry is. It doesn't matter who you are, where you're from, or what you background is if when your hormones are telling that they are not turning on because the other preson is.... White, Black, European, Oriental, male, female, blonde, brunette, ginger, short, tall, old, young, etc..... you get my drift!? then that is how it is. I don't think Prince deliberately alienates or dismisses any type or group of people in general, but when it comes to the ones that gets the sexual chemistry charged and on then it is because of a certain type of person. Simple,! No? Life's a Parade! LoveLife, LoveSexy!

U guys should try to look at "Graffiti Bidge" as just a musical...And then it is great. Maybe the acting coulda been better, or a fortune spent on sets, but that is what is cool about it. Weren't his movies meant for that? Besides, what if he prefers the Latin look. We all prefer something. Lot's of white girls here love only black guys or Indonesian guys. I'm with you on this! All I did was watch the movie/movies, and failed to see all of the negativity to particular skin color. While watching Purple Rain for example, all I noticed was that he fell for a very beautiful young woman and then the dumpster scene with the pathetic tart that by her own pathetic behaviour is probably used to being thrown into the trash...to me it's more of a gender slur then racial. The fact that it was a MAN throwing a WOMAN into a trash dumpster is more of an issue then skin color here people! The same goes for the part where The Kid hits Apples because she's doing something she wants to do...again it's gender related focusing on spousal abuse. Even though these movies were badly acted out in the end I still thought they were just great music and simple fun! [Edited 1/26/08 21:09pm] He gets it! That's why the ladies love him...

Sorry to correct (sincerely!) but he was 32 and has been in the business to know a hell of a lot better! And Tame Hun, I totally understand your point of view, but when you spending the amount of (someone elses) money as he did, as well as getting paid to do so, and having the option to hire and draft in paid actors and script writers.editors, producers etc. there isn't really any excuse to end up with a film that looks like Prince, invited over a load of friends as well as dragging in any minneapolis local that walked by in the street on the off chance they might want or have the the time to be an extra in a film, maybe more, who knows, and then knocked it up in Paisley Park studios in less than a week. Like a homemade university project!! With that said - like I said before, see it as a collection of videos to accompany the album, and it's not actually that bad!!! Life's a Parade! I just watched this tonight for the first time. It was fucking horrible! I love Prince but I think he was stroking his own ego with this one. I didn't understand what was going on half the time. It was cheesy, Prince was cheesy. His clothes were awful. And don't get me started on that hair. Oh and let's not forget the terrible facial hair. Jesus H Christ, was this movie a stinker.
But Prince is still the man. Shake it til ya make it

Weren't his movies meant for that? Besides, what if he prefers the Latin look. We all prefer something. Lot's of white girls here love only black guys or Indonesian guys. I was exactly thinking the same. It's a bit sad that people tend to put (their?) issues into everything. For issues like race to exist both parties have to interact on that. Not only the ones who discriminate but also the victims who are on the receiving end. Those receivers can then also cultivate and perpetuate this stigma by bringing it into every issue. I reckognize such things are sensitive stuff but in my opinion not every movie, book, story has to bring these things to the surface. The thing with GB is that it has a story where race doesn't seem to matter for the story and people are just people interacting. In that perspective it's quite enjoyable and maybe it's a fairytale and out of touch but that doesn't matter cuz it's a story to entertain and highlight other things (like love and competition interaction). the narcissist that is prince sees himself in latina's, not that they are better than any other woman. he probably sees black women as disaproving of him ( before the $) and generalizes them as loud and insensitive.remember this is one sheltered dude, he grew up in minneapolis and had a record contract at 19!
