My only weird theory about it was that he was browsing through a dirty magazine, and got caught up in the fantasy. Maybe the woman was posing in a castle, maybe she was using some "devices" on herself, and through the power of imagination Prince ended up there with her.

But generally I think it's a kind of silly lyric about a one night stand that probably never even happened, and that the lyrics just flowed out in a clever way that didn't necessarily make perfect sense. smile

Well, at least I got some of ya'll thinking! It was dead as hell in this forum anyway. I wound up writing Prince ears vs. Prince feet. That's mainly why I went ahead with this. Just something to ponder on if u wish. If not, you're all still beautiful and I can dig it.

Real question; How does the lyrics equate to selling one's soul? To satan no less? I'm a very creative cat but where is that in the lyrics?

Well for me, it was nothing about the lyrics perse, that seemed any more than some sexual themed Prince song. Ironically, I always felt the lyrics to be weak. Almost throw-awayish. P starts down a path, setting up a visual scenerio, mentioning castles spinning which is good, but then it's just the kiddish show u how to grind. So I never held the lyrics up at all. It's the cold ass groove and the guitar melody doubled with the keys in the intro that I loved. And of course the backward message at the end, but that's another story. I too felt that Pwrote this with the film in mind. P probably already had the music before they even started fucking with the idea of a film. Hence he just wrote some lyrics in 10 minutes tailored for this scene with Apples. I've BEEN hipped to all of that since 84. My thing what I was curious about is that I wanted to see not what u all thought of the lyrics, in the general or obvious sense, BUT if u had ever felt anything else about the song, that maybe something was odd about it. Granted, I've always felt the sound of the overall track was different from the rest of the album. Closest thing to it, soundwise, was Computer Blue. The riff is off the fucking hook. It's vintage Prince, musically. I guess I'm just looking to see if someone is going to post something remotely similar to what I was told a half a year ago that tripped them out.

Are you still seeing this girl??? hmmm

Okay, okay...I won't put ya on blast like that, LOL!

To answer the question, other than the obvious sexual connotations there's an underlying theme of temptation and redemption, a commonly recurring theme in Prince's work where he describes the seductive allure of the abyss in various forms, (sign your name on the dotted line), vs the yearning of the soul for an ultimately more edifying experience, (backwards message).

Another aspect that you alluded to is the way he can use the combination of music and lyrics in certain songs to convey the intensity of what he's expressing. The odd thing about it is that he can do this more consistently than most. It's like the essence of whatever he's feeling spills out all over you sometimes, know what I mean? He's an individual with a powerful aura.

There are certain songs that give the feeling that he's somehow gotten um..."intimate" with you without your conscious consent and there's nothing left to do except have a shower or a cigarette or go to sleep! lol Nikki is one of those songs.

There are other songs that I could only describe as musical samadhi where you feel transported to a whole nother dimension but that's another thread in itself.

Side note...I think it's a popular myth that Prince is shy. He is often reticent, which implies shyness but it's not quite the same thing.

I'd be interested to know the reason this lady's words have stayed on your mind, hmmm?
Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

We are trippin on this tread, the track Darling Nikki is a tribute to masturbation, in some ways comparable to Vivaldi´s 4 Seasons. Spring to Winter, the four steps to ?....the point of no return.

This is set out very well in Darling Nikki, the music collaborating completely with the Lyrics, to the final moments, then there is reverse thought, the feeling of having just done something wrong and running it backwards to put it back. cool

Nothing "shocking" really. It's just that I've seen sooo many times on here how defensive some orgers get regarding P. That's why I asked what do YOU guys think, if anything, is the song about. It might not be about anything except about P meeting a girl in a hotel lobby. Let me ask this....have u ever wondered why P laughs after saying that he knows the Lord is coming soon? I must admit that I've ALWAYS wondered about that. It's such an odd place to laugh.

yeah, it does seem like a strange place to laugh, but i think he was more caught up in his own sense of wittiness by placing a backmasking in that spot, thereby forcing the fan to reverse it and finding it out for themselves. such sillness!
