Did Prince Somehow buy his masters back? When you check Prince songs in the ASCAP database they now say "Publishers/Administrators:
CONTROVERSY MUSIC % UNIVERSAL MUSIC CORPORATION" No mention of Warner Bros. or WEA or anything. Not A Newbie, Just Reinvented | |

I wouldn't be surprised if he did get to own them at somepoint(if he doesn't already) they'll be worth less and less to record companies in the long term with the decline in CD sales and more and more illegal downloads. [Edited 1/23/08 13:11pm] | |

The publishing rights to Prince's compositions (previously administered by Warners) reverted back to him in 2000. He then signed a 5 year deal with Universal (renewed again on expiry), and UM administer the rights. Sound recording copyright registration The master recordings of Prince's music released by Warners revert back to Prince 35 years after release (upon application). So, unless Warners agree to handing them back beforehand, they should begin to revert in a few years time. The copyright in the sound recording is registered at the Library of Congress, so your search should be there to establish the Warners interest in the master recordings: http://cocatalog.loc.gov/ See also the Org FAQ - section 4.8 http://prince.org/msg/7/145050 .
