In terms of lyricists, Prince actually roundly gets his ass kicked by several, including Matt Good, Bowie, Maynard, Dylan, Waters, and the list goes on.
In terms of composers, Prince roundly gets his ass kicked today by most lesser known (or just less commercial) artists, not the least of which include Thom Yorke, Reznor, PJ Harvey, Annie Lennox, Jack White, and the list goes on here too. The only way in which Prince is still the best is as a live performer. He still has no equal in that department. In a purely historical context, Prince is probably the most talented living modern musical artist of our times.
