SOTT: Disc I vs. Disc II

Haha, i'm aware that u guys are sick of all the vs. threads.

But I want my crack at something that I'm working through right now.

Since the get-go, Disc II had won me over cuz "If eye was ur g/f" and "I could never take the place of ur man" alone.

Disc I had all kinds of stuff, some good and some I wasnt quite into the first couple of times.

After giving myself a little extra time with Disc I, I'm currently digging it a lot more than Disc II. "Hot thing" and "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker" were two highlight tracks for my trip into the album tonight.

Both of my SOTT discs have always been at odds with each other, since the day I purchased 'em.
So much so, that I've been forced to keep 'em in separate disc holders.
So my answer is
I don't know.
And I don't want to find out.

Give peace a chance, y'all.

For me it's a toss up between sides 1, 2, 3 or 4.

Disc One gets more play, but it's not an album that I listen to all that much these days - the stuff that came when it was supposed to be Crystal Ball gets more play.

1. "U Got the Look"
2. "If I Was Your Girlfriend"
3. "Strange Relationship"
4. "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man"
5. "The Cross" –
6. "It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night"
7. "Adore"

Disc two just about wins it for me Dreamypop.

I love some of these songs.

I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man is a song I could never get tired of, unlike some great songs from Prince, like Purple Rain.

U got the look and the Cross gets a couple of plays too!

Disc I got more play from me because of SOTT, Dorothy Parker, Starfish & Coffee & Slow Love. But Disc II I must have run a groove or two into If I Was Your Girlfriend, The Cross & Adore. If I had to make one disc It would contain the following:

1. Sign 'O' The Times
2. Ballad Of Dorothy Parker
3. Starfish and Coffee
4. Slow Love
5. Hot Thing
6. If I Was Your Girlfriend
7. Strange Relationship
8. I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man
9. The Cross
10. Adore

Then I'd just keep it on repeat rather than going from one disc to another. wink

Some good answers here.
Seems like Disc I is a little extra popular.

I was going through a rough time just last night and it could be cuz I played Disc I on its own the night b4, but that was the kind of material I needed to hear. I'd say Disc I is a little more personal so I enjoyed Prince's character there a lot more.

Disc II blew me away the first time because I hadn't heard any "official" Camille material except for "Rockhard in a Funky Place"... and "If eye was ur g/f"... can't say enough how impressed I am with that song. He was really in the zone and got across the message he intended to with flying colors rainbow
Strange Relationship is good as well, but I think I'm still figuring it, haha.

If anything, I think that Disc I is closer to how I perceived Prince at the beginning of the game. So it kinda has that timeless quality about it. But the whole album has timelessness written all over it.

heres a short story for ya...a while ago (couple of years ago) i never even knew it had 2 discs. this was the time i had just become a fan and set out to buy his material...and saw it in a charity shop for about a fiver...it was the sing of the times disc (number 2) but it was properly cased etc, never realised they sold them seperately. wasnt until about 4 months later i found out there was a first disc to it lol.

but i am not a big fan of disc one too much...disc 2 is a masterpiece in every area to me...so it has to be disc 1 biggrin
Wouldn't you love to love me?

Please. Modern sucka's. Let's go old skool. Pick a side.

My choice is a good toss-up between side 1 with the title track, Housequake and Dorothy Parker and side 3 with If I Was Your Girlfriend and Strange Relationship.

But as I gotta make a choice; Side 1. It's classic. From contemplation soul to party rock to funk party to queer (as in weird, not gay)

Haha... reminds me of something Stephen Colbert once said. "There's the lower class and there's the upper class. Middle class people, pick a side!" something like that.

Anyway... Side 1 really is a mix of the best. I thought that it was the more serious of the two and I prefered the funner side (disc I)... but there is a mix of serious and fun in both, so that method is out.

Side I is a collection of the best genres in some of the best songs he's done, at times, the first and/or only of their kind. And most of them are pretty much where he came to conclusions about himself and of the types of things he "preaches" about in his music. And it shows how much he's matured as an artist.

An example of this would be "Slow Love"... somehow it reminds me of "International Lover" but without the screaming and ahem, "airplane metaphors". And in some ways, it also shows a dissolution of some of the arrogance his music had shown up to that point.

sides 1, 3 and 4 ..side 2 gets hit with a minor snag called slow love
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I can't decide. I love the whole thing! Based on the vinyl, God that was too cool to see that again, thanks HH, I'd pick sides 1, 3 and 4. On CD, it would be Disc 2.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I recall seeing the album as one cd a few years ago.

I prefer listening to disk 2 because of If I Was Your Girlfriend and Adore.

haha... yeah I didn't know which lyrics those were until I heard the song.

It's the main reason why I loved Disc II on sight. And I still get that warm-fuzzy feeling when I listen to that song... although I've only heard it... um... about 10 times, cuz that's as many times as I've listened to the album and/or disc II.

I refer to Disc II as Camille, although that's only the first 3 (or technically, songs 2 & 3). But after listening thru it, I became a Camille fan. cool
