Prince needs to hire Janet's manager: what do YOU think?

I saw a dear friend of mine the other day, who is a big Janet Jackson fan. Anyway, we had a fun little talk about one of my favorite topics, music. He was telling me about all the stuff he's read on Janet lately, telling me everything she's been thru, and went on to say how her new album is gonna put her back on top. Then he asked me, "So, how about Prince?"

"What about Prince?"

"Well, when's he gonna be back on top?" he says. "He's kind of off-the-radar, don't you think?"

"Maybe he doesn't want to be on the radar," I said, trying to keep my tone as objective as humanly possible. "Maybe he's comfortable where he is."

"Well, he's just not trying anymore. Ever since Michael Jackson fell out of grace, he thinks he's won the big 80's stand-off and doesn't have to try anymore."

"Oh?"

"Yeah, what he needs to do is let somebody else manage him, which he won't do. But that's what he needs. That's what Janet's doing. He needs to give up and let somebody else steer him, somebody that knows how to market him."

"That's interesting," I says.

Anyway, it was a fun little exchange. My friend never got to see my point, that I was sure Prince was just happy with where he is. I wanted to tell him that if Prince wanted to sell a hundred million records, he could.

But I didn't. It seemed like a wasted effort.

What are your thoughts on this?

Prince's agenda is nowhere near Janet's. Not now, not EVER.

I think not, janet and Prince are two completely different artists on two different lavels. Janet had gone through many managers over the last 8 yrs and musically has not grown and is very inconsistent.

Prince doesnt need to compete. There is not competition when it comes to Prince. Janet is obviously insecure in her place in the industry and feels she needs to compete still. She should be content in her contributions to the music industry. In my opinion Janets motivation for still being in the music business is not the same as Princes.

I'm not sure why anyone would feel Prince needs Janets manager, but the selling of records has more to do with the artist and their talent and relationship with their audience than the manager. Managers come and go, but talent and musicianship will last the long haul. Janet is predictable and her music and sound never changes. If anything Janet need Prince's manager.

Janet is not and will never be on Prince's level.

Sometimes people just show how out of touch they are. Prince has staged a remarkable come back over the last 4 years and he has a manager.

Janet could take a few lessons from him on how to grow older and adjust.
In addtion, she has never been in Prince's league.

The deal was negotiated between the Mail on Sunday, Prince's manager Paul Gongaware, and Rob Hallet, an executive with entertainment company AEG, the major redevelopers of the Millennium Dome, now known as the O2, where the artist will be performing later this year.
-----

The Mail on Sunday has threatened legal action over its unprecedented giveaway of Prince's new album Planet Earth to try and force it into the official music charts.

MediaGuardian.co.uk has seen a copy of a letter the Mail on Sunday managing director, Stephen Miron, sent this week to the Official UK Charts Company, demanding it include Planet Earth in its albums chart.

On Sunday the MoS will distribute 2.9m copies with the Planet Earth CD included for free, after paying about £250,000 to Prince for the licence.

An extra 200,000 copies of the paper will be printed without the CD for foreign and bulk sales.

The Mail on Sunday sells 2.3m copies each weekend, according to the latest ABC figures.

Producing and marketing the Prince CD will add several hundred thousand pounds to the MoS's costs, pushing the total bill for the Associated Newspapers title's promotional gambit towards £1m.

"We are spending a fortune on this," said Mr Miron.

In the letter to the Official UK Charts Company, Mr Miron wrote: "Given our belief that this album should still be included on the official UK album charts and having responded to your issues, I would urge you to reconsider your previous position as a matter of urgency, before we engage our lawyers for legal advice to force a challenge to this restraint on our trade."

The Official UK Charts Company has refused to enter the album Planet Earth on its chart, saying it could not prove that newspaper sales were "genuine consumer purchases" and that it could not audit sales accurately.

"It's denying Prince his rights," Mr Miron told MediaGuardian.co.uk. "It will be number one in the UK chart and we think that's something that he should be able to do.

"The fact that they are referring back to rules put in place ages ago doesn't seem to fit with the way the music industry is now. I think they are mad."

Mr Miron said that legal action was not inevitable. "We are just considering our position with that at the moment really," he added.

Prince will also receive royalties from each copy of the Mail on Sunday sold in addition to the licence fee.

"Prince would not be able to get as much money by selling this record in shops than he will with this deal," Mr Miron said.

He added that despite the enormous expense of the promotion, whether it was profitable for the paper depended on how many copies the Mail on Sunday sold his weekend. "It may be the best value promotion that we have ever done," he said.

Already news of the alliance between the paper and the recording star has featured on the BBC Six O'Clock News and in the New York Times. Advertisers are crowding into the paper as a result, according to Mr Miron.

For the first time, music chain HMV will sell the newspaper after initially complaining about the promotion.

An edition of the MoS containing a giveaway of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells album earlier this year sold 2.6m copies, while the edition that carried news of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997 sold 2.8m copies.

When Prince's UK record company Sony BMG found out about the MoS's promotion, it suspended the release of the album.

The deal was negotiated between the Mail on Sunday, Prince's manager Paul Gongaware, and Rob Hallet, an executive with entertainment company AEG, the major redevelopers of the Millennium Dome, now known as the O2, where the artist will be performing later this year.

Agent Simon Stanford of Upfront Promotions set up the deal, which will see the CD and the CD cover incorporate the Mail on Sunday logo.

The Entertainment Retailers Association, whose members account for more than 90% of retail sales of CDs in the UK and which half owns the Official UK Charts Company, has protested to the Audit Bureau of Circulations in an attempt to get it to discount the sales boost from the paper's circulation results.

"We believe that this promotion and others like it potentially distort the accuracy of ABC's audit in a way which could mislead advertisers and other users of your data," wrote the ERA secretary general, Kim Bayley.

The MoS was offering an incentive to purchase worth up to seven times the £1.40 cover price of the newspaper, the ERA said.

"These people are desperate people," Mr Miron responded.

The ABC did not release a comment responding to the ERA, but will audit the paper to the agreed industry standards.

He never went any place but things were not going that well after "RAVE" bombed. He has done a great job putting himself back into the mainstream. The very thing the poster's friend can't seem to see (LOL)

I agree.
I think its just hard for for some fans to realize that no matter who the artist is ....even Elvis would get pushed to the curb due to AGEISM in the music industry now. Although Racism has something to do with it too.
Except a little bit with Madonna still (altoughth they dont play her anymore either much on radio or MTV f@ckers) all of the truely original artists now in thier 40's have taken a back seat to crap like Britney Spears and Justin Timberfake! Who's laughing now? I wish they'd stop harrassing her I dont give a shit about her or the other blond rich elite barbies walking around.
Sad I know.
Its wierd in the 80's thier was more appreciation for artist of true talent. Even Tina Turner went on to hit it BIG! she was not a young sprite at the time although she is HUGELY Talented and GREAT PERFORMER! unlike the crap we have to deal with now. ughhhh! I feel sorry for the Generation of kids growing up the last few years....nothing to listen to but Alicia Keys, Black Eyed Peas or a few other artists. Thank God for them.
But I agree that Prince is just happy where he is at. He does not have to prove himself. UH, HES HAS ALREADY DONE THAT!!!!!
Many TIMESSSS!!!!! DUH!!!!!
so has Michael Jackson. And he has been in the Business longer than prince and Madonna put2gether. So Michael just wants to enjoy life and see his kids grow up.
He was never allowed to enjoy life for so long. Neigher MJ or Prince need to prove anything more to us. They are Living LEGENDS in Music!
The only one not tired out from proving themself somewhat still is Madonna.
She is like the Energizer Bunny...She keeps Going and Going and Going...too funny!
Maybe its a woman thing. or that she lost her mom at a young age always trying tto prove herself I dunno.
just kidding around. But I'm sure she would like to just take it easy eventually thats why she tours every few years and has skyrocketing ticket prices cause thats the only way to make money and store it away in the music biz right now. So that when they are in thier 60s and 70s they wont have to wear themselves out too soon like the Godfather of Soul James Brown. May he rest in ROYAL PEACE!!
Anyway..I agree. There is nothing to prove. They are the GREATS of our lifetime.
I just have not seen anything yet come along for the NEXT!
And that says alot doesnt it!
Nothing better has come along! That are Innovators and Revolutionaries.
(wasnt it great to live and see that growing up in the 80s and 90s!!)
they kicked that door open to all who can come through now. Although
there is such a tight rope on the Radio Stations now cause of Bill Clinton passing that law for them to buy up the radio stations and corporate run america. That crucified any chance on inspiration for future music lovers.
I still Love Bill Clinton but found out too much after what the eyes wide open
from this fascist administration weve had the last 8 years.
We need new blood in the white house. I will be acceptable with hillary but very happy with Obama.
Its a popularity contest though. Ive already lost all hope for this country or anything else anymore.
I just need the Music to keep me sane all through this mess we are in.

Janet's career is like her weight.

I think Prince's career is as successful as he feels it is.
