HERE ON EARTH's "happy ending"

i was thinking about this track from one nite alone piano and voice cd (not to be confused with SOMEWHERE here on earth from pe, which is cool also, but pretty self-explanatory). the beginning depicts a young woman fleeing from an abusive husband, pretty heavy stuff. however 3/4 in, the man wakes up, apparently this was all just a dream. the first time i heard this, i was like WTF mad ! no no no! no way a song about domestic violence should have a "happy ending" like this. sort of a copout, i thought. the more i thought about it though, i figured perhaps there could be another reason for this. perhaps this was the man's subconscious revealing his worst fears or his guilt for feeling this way when him and his wife disagree? i'm not sure, but i still like the song. very jazzy, nice feel to it. just wondering what you guys thought about it. smile

I just heard this song for the first time recently, and loved it, I know what you mean about it being a bit of a cop out half way through, it's as if it's been edited somewhere down the line confused Builds an amazing picture at the beginning and then doesn't go anywhere.

He does like a positive outcome at the end of everything he does though, so he says, so maybe that's why. It's a strange one nod

I'm loving listening to this whole album, amazing biggrin

I haven't seen the whole video...just the clip, that we had....
What I have realized about Prince, is that He likes to look at love from the beginning....What happened in the garden? After God made Adam's woman from himself?
Temptation....Well, although Adam and Eve were born of eachother....She listened to the liar, the serpent, and this did two things....It polluted, the offspring of the world, and It also made Adam jealous.

I am sure, that the love between Adam and Eve was emotional...When Eve ran away from the discipline she would endure from Adam...He followed Her, as She and Adam...spend eternity, in repentence, for the sake of us.

I believe that Prince studies the lover's heart...Many Prince songs, are born of this mystery.

or it could just b that in one's dreams we tend 2 visualize some crazy shit that makes no sense, and we wake up saying 2 ourselves "what the hell was that?"..so in the man's dreams he may have had that kind of dream that wasn't true, so he leans over 2 kiss her kind of reassuring both that it was just that ....a dream
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

What in the world makes you think that this song is about "domestic violence"?

hmmm well, only in the beginning, a woman is running "for her very life" from her husband. "the danger hardly gone", lyrics like that. smile

Call me crazy, but I always think he's referring to Mayte during there tragedy with the baby because it says cold October. I always think Prince's life is in his songs one way or another. It seems he's dreaming about his wife and her turmoil/heartbreak but, after he wakes up from this nightmare he realizes things could be a lot worst.
