I think he's saying before fashion models, the word might have more referred to a role model in life, when applied to a person.

I think he just had his head up his ass when he wrote that lyric...

Kind of like some of the stuff in the title track for Chaos & Disorder, not quite as clear a comparison as a more reasonable person might craft.

I thought he was saying that the WORD "model" used to mean "role model;" now when you hear that word, it means a person who models clothing for a living...



As in, "this person is a model for you to follow."

Does that make any sense?
