Just one of dozens of songs Prince has written that has a different meaning depending on how you listen to it. It's not Prince comparing himself to nor posing as Jesus. Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. More info at https://www.facebook.com/TMATSPodcast/

He is probably singing from the point of view of Christ. But I always thought it would be neat if he was singing as pure, deep, love. Which could be the same thing, depending on your point of view. I mean, love is suppose to be this great, rich, purifying thing that can save you.
Does that make sense? | |

It's sung from the viewpoint of God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit).
The chorus's are from Jesus' point of view, and each verse is sung from the perspective of a different part of the trinity (a concept that Prince's viewpoint has changed about since becoming a Jehovah's Witness). The first verse is from God's point of view: (not a woman or man, but ready to forgive) The second verse is from Jesus' point of view: (a person, but not a lover or a friend... instead, your messiah) The third verse is from the Holy spirit's point of view: (a dove... conscience and love) .

thread appreciated. reading through the responses makes me realise how deep some Prince fans are, and ... how much some of us share perspectives. i agree with what is shared above, and also add that Prince sees himself as a special person, almost fulfilling a Christ-like role ... what comes to my mind is that one still image of him singing Purple Rain in the Rave Un2 video, if y'all can remember.
as for I Would Die 4 U ... definitely the theme is used to highlight an intense kind of love for a loved one.

nothing mysterious, it's a common ploy of rockstars to take on the messianic role, this is Prince's version.

I don't think it's either, just a song from a movie.

In the original the passage that precedes , "I would die 4 U" is:
"I'm not a woman, I'm not a man, I am something that you'll never understand, no need to worry, no need to cry, I'm your Messiah..." Later, Prince changes the words to "He's your Messiah." So the truth of weather or not Prince is the Messiah, is in His honest answer of why He did that." And, the song "Sexuality," also breeds the idea that Prince could be...and the study continues. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

I would like to give Prince more credit than that as a song writer.

I thought he heard his Dad say it when he was a child? He told this to Albert Magnoli, and that's why the line was used in PR. I thought the song was about that....

Well, then...why is it one of the many songs he often changes the lyrics to to spiritually sanitize them? "I'm your messiah & you're the reason why" was changed to "He's your messiah..." This is much like what he did with "The Cross," rewriting it as "The Christ" or even the absurd changes he made to "I Feel For You." It could have been left alone as a rocking sort of devotional song with no tedious religious overtones (people in relationships often view each other as their "saviors" or "messiahs"), but no, Prince can't even leave the Jeebus out of "Purple Rain."
