When you "sample" another song and use it for your own as P-Diddy has done or Ice-T has done or Ice Cube has done or MC Hammer has done, etc..... where is the artistry in that? Do you know how difficult it is to learn how to play a musical instrument at a profesional level? And how difficult it is to compose music at the professional level? Rappers are theives - in the temple and everywhere else.

Rap did hurt Prince b/c by the late 80s early 90s he was so desperate to be accepted by the black music community that he decided to sell out and attempt to be hip by incorporating rap into his music. Tony was a friggin disgrace. That that musical goofball was ever allowed onto musical recordings with Prince is a travesty of the highest order. Prince layed down with the dogs and he woke up with fleas. He lost so much respect. Compared to the 80s, very few people give a hoot about Prince's new albums. They are correctly assumed to be garbage.

Prince should have stayed true to himself like Neil Young. If he had done that there would have been a 5 year period or so where he was out of vogue and un-appreciated but then he would have reaped the rewards in the long run. Too many people view Prince as a bad joke now. A shame.

Oh pleaseeeee.....Prince lost respect when he did the name change and started writing slave on his face....(90's). Hip hop had nothing to do with that mess.

Get your Prince history right.

Having been a hardcore Prince fan since 1980 who saw Prince play clubs on the Dirty Mind tour, and who owns Prince bootlegs back when they were still making them on VINYL, don't even begin to tell me about knowing Prince history.

By your response you imply that Prince only began to lose respect when he did the name change and wrote "slave" on his face. Well, if you think that you clearly haven't been around since the early days. Its undeniable that Prince began to lose respect, critical and fan alike, with the BATMAN soundtrack. That thing was a joke compared to PRINCE->LOVESEXY era. Then he lost more with GRAFFITI BRIDGE and the rap stuff. People who were major Prince fans headed for the hills and simply listened to the old albums after that. He was clearly no longer the same artist. By the time the name change/slave thing happened Prince's respect was already in free-fall. You might think you know Prince history but you don't.

lol awwwww you probably call yourself a fam too huh...I've been around for a minute...from the beginning.

I would say that its deniable that Prince's fall from folks graces started with Batman. I think some could make an argument that you're wrong.....and those would still be long standing Prince fans. Prince still had folks lovin' on him with the D&P cd, cream and get off especially. I would say after the symbol cd.....folks were like...wha, huh?

So you THINK you know what all hardcore prince fans were doing and thinking...but NOPE....ya don't. So nothing is clear....

So we both don't KNOW....Are we even now.....lol....

and I've been a fan since 78 (saw prince in Right On! mag and was done)....tag you're it.

Umm...pardon me...but as an about to retire with 30 years under my belt ol'school Prince connoisseur from wayyy back in the day. It is my duty to inform you that you are both wrong in this instance.

All of what you are talking about began with ATWIAD. Which many were expecting to follow in the footsteps of the incomparable Purple Rain and when it didn't but ventured off in to what would come to be known as one of Prince's many WTF moments that's when he started losing the respect of many of his fans and inspiring hysterical laughter from his critics.

Ok...carry on!

Sorry to butt in on your debate but I don't think the release of Around the World in Day lost "respect" as much as it lost a large part of his commercial following!

If anything, it gained him alot of respect (even more in retrospect) because it was his first grand statement of showing that he will release the music he wants to, as a creative artist and not as a commercial commodity!

It is also the benchmark of introduction to the sound and style of Prince's music that everyone so fondly remembers and Defines Prince as an artist.

I don't think anyone disrespects Prince for these actions, they just don't like the album or the attitude as much as Purple Rain.

Prince wasn't crazy. If he had released any leading singles, the album wouldn't have sold near as many copies as it did because people would have been hip to his style change and wouldn't have bought the album.

I have to disagree. As much as it may not be a collection of his best work, the only song that I have always had problems with is The Ladder!!

This era even had some of his most creative B sides - Hello, Girl and She's always in my hair, and also for the tears in ur eyes.

The music of this era is not the easiest to initially listen too and get sucked in by it I agree, but over time, It's creativity, art and importance on the effect it had on Prince's music has become more and more obvious to me.

Without it I don't think Parade would be the Marvel that it is, and that for me would be a tragedy on a Shakespearean level!!!!

admitingly atwiad took me time 2 digest and i agree with an above post saying that this is when he started losing credence with his fan base and started shrinking the sales numbers in the US. it's taking many years 4 hardcore fans 2 say this album is a masterpiece.

there will always b those that say batman was the beginning of the end and others that love that album. 4 me it's taking up 2 planet earth 2 finally say it's an album that is totally shit while others love it. diversity keeps the world moving i guess shrug
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

touched It's just an opinion that has developed and matured over 22 years of Loving his Music!

Parade and Sign "O" the times are ground breaking, and along with Lovesexy my top 3 official albums.....but I always wonder what would have happened if Prince had stayed with Dream Factory instead of SOTT.

I love that album nearly just as much as Parade and SOTT!!!

In your opinion, has cRAP bad affected Prince's music?
I have nothing against cRAP, but cRAP has nothing to do with "real music 4 real music lovers".
Last week i was listening to "Diamonds and pearls": there are some songs (Daddy pop, Live 4 love) really devastated by cRAP, and you can find many eaxamples in all albums starting from 1988.
Jazz influence is ok, as soul, funk, hard rock... but i wish P had never fallen in love with cRAP....

Rap is not music, and Prince should never lower himself to that substandard. Prince is a musician who can play instruments. Rap and hiphop is created by the lower class for low class people (the mainstream and below).

A vile comment. I hope you die a less ignorant soul than you currently are.

You absolutely have a point that at the time it was a damn questionable move, at least among the broader fanbase. That said, it was probably a smarter move for his career in the long run, as he firmly established that he wasn't trying to follow up Purple Rain for the sake of following up Purple Rain. That was the path MJ took, and while he sold a shitload of albums chasing Thriller, that path has left with him nowhere to go as an artist. Meanwhile people mainly expect Prince to do whatever the fuck he wants.
"What kind of fuck ending is that?"

Though his album sales were down, Prince's musical reputation actually increased during the ATWIAD, PARADE, and SOTT. His rep took a slight hit during LOVESEXY. His rep truly plummeted beginning with the BATMAN SOUNDTRACK and continuing with his feeble rap influenced tracks into the 90s. I'm glad I was hardcore into Prince from 1980-87, aka the time when he earned his 'musical genius' reputation.
