How did I generalize all Rap? I said that rap shouldn't be taken seriously unless it involves instruments and original music. I made this statement with The Roots in mind, being that they are one of only a handfull of rap acts that fall into this category.
99% of rap is junk.

99% of what is on radio is junk...

i go to okayplayer and even myspace and hear excellent hip hop all the time.

Total bs the manner Hip hop is being describe on this thread.

FYI: Not all hip hop artist sample.

I still say that Prince went from mocking the genre to having some appreciation for it when he realized HE can't rap nor break into the genre himself. Hell he couldn't even pick good rappers to be in his own band (outside of the Doug e fresh stuff).

Hip Hop didn't hurt Prince. Prince just isn't hip hop. shrug

When you "sample" another song and use it for your own as P-Diddy has done or Ice-T has done or Ice Cube has done or MC Hammer has done, etc..... where is the artistry in that? Do you know how difficult it is to learn how to play a musical instrument at a profesional level? And how difficult it is to compose music at the professional level? Rappers are theives - in the temple and everywhere else.

Rap did hurt Prince b/c by the late 80s early 90s he was so desperate to be accepted by the black music community that he decided to sell out and attempt to be hip by incorporating rap into his music. Tony was a friggin disgrace. That that musical goofball was ever allowed onto musical recordings with Prince is a travesty of the highest order. Prince layed down with the dogs and he woke up with fleas. He lost so much respect. Compared to the 80s, very few people give a hoot about Prince's new albums. They are correctly assumed to be garbage.

Prince should have stayed true to himself like Neil Young. If he had done that there would have been a 5 year period or so where he was out of vogue and un-appreciated but then he would have reaped the rewards in the long run. Too many people view Prince as a bad joke now. A shame.

Oh pleaseeeee.....Prince lost respect when he did the name change and started writing slave on his face....(90's). Hip hop had nothing to do with that mess.

Get your Prince history right.

Rap should never, ever, be taken seriously as a form of music or art, unless it involves instrumentation with "real" instruments, and is a truly original composition.
Rap/hip-hop as we know it, and it's influence on today's youth has totally ruined today's popular music scene by totally dumbing down people's perception of what real music is.
It is a real shame. All real music lovers should denounce rap/hip-hop at any opportunity.

Add a E to RAP and it spells RAPE!

define real instruments? back in the 1600s your electric guitars wouldnt have been considered real either

some people dig opera music, mozart, or
punk or metal, while others dig rap and rNb.

personally, i never got into Tony rapping in Prince's
music. in fact, as a fan, that's when i started wondering
what was going on, and I was young then (16-17).

Prince has also referred to his own "style" of rapping, as
talking 2 music...which can be found in I.Bitch, SexyMF,
and Style.

rap music has its roots in the motherland, Africa. rap artists are the
descendents of those known as griots. before slaves were taken away,
griots were the oral historians of many nations and communities. they
would recite, or rap out the history of the monarchies or the communities.
griots were also trained within the family, and this carried on through
many generations. the link is definitely there between past and present.

sadly, i do not have much respect for many contemporary rap artists such
as Nelly, 50cent and the whole gangsta clan ... why perpetuate negativity
and negative images of a people?

rather, give me some ole school like Kurtis Blow, GrandmasterFlash and Melle
Mel, Whodini even...Lawd, the list is endless.

but the media forces also want to force kRAP on the masses, instead of
conscious messages.

The biggest mistake many have about hip hop artist is that they aren't musicians. Even Flava Flav can play multiple instruments and can play them well.

I'm very impressed with the lyrical content I do hear from some artist.

This is actually one genre of MUSIC Prince himself thought was crap until he realized he can't rap nor write for hip hop (Enter Doug E and Eve).

lauryn hill and wyclef being prime examples of rappers that can play instruments making themselves musicians
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

respect 2 kool moe dee as well!

what smells like roses to some ppl is shit 2 others. we just have to accept that people have different tastes in music. rap or hip hop will never go away. they have both sparked new dance movements after breakdancing, that attract the youth from all quarters. like george clinton said in Rave Un2, if the adults don't like it, but the youth do, there must be something there (not his exact words).

a message can be communicated in many ways.

In your opinion, has cRAP bad affected Prince's music?
I have nothing against cRAP, but cRAP has nothing to do with "real music 4 real music lovers".
Last week i was listening to "Diamonds and pearls": there are some songs (Daddy pop, Live 4 love) really devastated by cRAP, and you can find many eaxamples in all albums starting from 1988.
Jazz influence is ok, as soul, funk, hard rock... but i wish P had never fallen in love with cRAP....

i love hiphop and yes sometimes prince and co.were embarrassing trying to rap...but he was alright on gett off, now, and a few other tracks he pulled surprisingly nice.and you could always tell a prince penned rap from a tony m. one falloff so sad for tony prince was a better rapper than him! falloff

What dance movements? For the last 15 years, it's been too slow to dance to.

As for "live and let live", shit hop has taken over every form of R&B on the radio. No form of R&B can get any airplay except shit hop because the labels and radio want to keep the cheapest form of R&B with the biggest profits in style forever. It has dominated for over 15 years. No other style of R&B has EVER dominated that long. This isn't the old days when styles could change naturally once people got tired of them. Executives bigger than the artists are keeping it as the dominating music force. The executives profiting from that so-called form of music have not let other forms of music "live and let live" so I have no respect whatsover for shit hop and anyone involved in it in any shape, form, or fashion.

there are many movies that have come out, documenting how the youth are taking dance to a new level; hip hop is a force behind that. peep this: http://www.youtube.com/wa..._qpXYBLb_c

it's what i'm talking about...dance as expression:

as for the execs, i agree .. they do not want conscious music out there that might challenge the status quo.
