Black Album 20yr appreciation

Weelllll.....

20yrs ago this time Prince was set to release the album intended to re-establish how brash, rude and funky he was. I still have a 3rd generation copy of the album on tape as well as a original vinyl copy. I can't say if this would have help or hurt his career had it come out at the time it was suppose to. That Alex Khan dude think the latter....But I still dig the joint. There are some tunes I'd wish he would've kept(dead on it being 1. But 20yrs later I still dig:

Le Grind
When 2 r in love
Rock Hard in funky place
Superfunkycalifragsexy
2 nigs united

Where's the Per Nielsen story on this when u need it?!?!

Took me many months to get it. The idea of the band jamming out Le Grind and Cindy C is just too funky.

I really want one of the 1994 vinyl issues to make a nice digital transfer with the right tone.

Prince's tightest album. Not one BS track on it, except maybe "When 2 R In Love". "Dead On It" I didn't really get for a while, but now I think it's hot, too.

The Black Album, what can you say, apart from Lovesexy, it was the last true blow your mind Prince album except for "when 2 R in love" which is a good track but does not fit in the concept of the album. When it was finally released in the 90´s it had lost it´s effect, especially the shock element. By then the likes of Public Enemy, Ice-T, NWA, De La Soul and many others had taken over that niche. I think the Black Album could have been another Dirty Mind, which would have brought Prince onto a new level, instead he released the fantastic Lovesexy, but it did not have that extra touch of madness (apart from the cover) which was the staple of P´s creativity. The black Album as a major release would have had the same effect as Dirty mind after Prince or ATWIAD after Purple rain, it would have stunned critics and audiences alike. But alas, it was not to be, and like many things since, Prince allows his spiritual side to stem his creativity. Oddly enough though, Prince´s most spiritually effective music was during the early 80´s bad ass dayz.
If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

"New Coat, huh? Thats nice..."

Wish he'd done "Le Grind" @ the O2 during the summer. Would have been a great show-opener. He missed a golden opportunity to ask "London, what does Big Ben say?".

I think I'd replace When 2 R in Love with Scarlet Pussy. Course, next thing you know we'll be talking about the Camille Album...

nothing. it's an instrumental with p and his band's overlapping vulgar conversations at the beginning. someone says the title at the beginning and end of the music part. pretty funky track. thumbs up! the "new coat, huh...that's nice" part is from another track bob george. p in a distorted deep voice killing his girlfriend and going at it with police. pretty funny stuff. if you like the boondocks. you'll get a kick out of this track, definitely.
