A lookback at Prince in 2007

2007 was quite a year with Prince. Here's a lookback at all that took place from January to December:

Viva Las Vegas!: Prince continued his run in Las Vegas with the 3121 Club that started in November 2006. The show was supposed to last until March but was extended a month due to popular demand. It was so big, even Michael Jackson caught a show.

Touchdown!!!!: Prince performs on Super Bowl 41. A billion people worldwide watched as Prince knocked everyone out with his performance of Let's Go Crazy, All Along The Watchtower/The Best of U, Proud Mary and the one and only Purple Rain. And he did all of this IN THE RAIN! It is regarded as one of the best and most watched Halftime shows in Super Bowl history.

"Imagine holding Planet Earth at the palm of ure hand": Prince releases a new CD called "Planet Earth" in late July. In the U.K., Prince releases "Planet Earth" through The Daily Mail, one of the U.K.'s major newspaper. 2.8 million copies were sold making it one of the biggest issues in the paper's history. The album debuts at #3 on the U.S. charts but quickly faded from view. Prince released the single "Guitar" through Verizon Wireless's V Cast. The video to the song "Somewhere Here on Earth" was shot in Prague and is expected to drop next month.

Something smells funky in here!: Prince releases a new perfume called "3121" on 7/7/07 and it's sold exclusively at Macy's in Minneapolis and online. To celebrate, Prince performs a special show for a limited number of fans at Macy's on 7/7/07. Later that night, he performed at the Target Center and then he performed at First Avenue for the aftershow. The First Avenue show was short, but it's his first performance there in 20 years. 3 shows in one day/night!

All the Critics Love U in London!: Prince performs in London for 21 nights throughout August and September. He also has aftershows after many of those concerts, some of which were deemed as classics. During his stay in London, he performs with Elton John and Amy Winehouse. It's his first concerts in the U.K. since 2002 and it was a huge success making Prince a big name in London again.

Prince vs. the Internet: starts legal fights with youtube about Copyright Infringement that leads to videos containing Prince's performances and videos with Prince music in it being taken off the site. It continues as he fight's with fansites over images and copyrights issues. prince.org, Housequake and Princefams start a website called princefansunited where they spoke of the problems they have faced with Prince and his legal team. It makes news and leads to Prince recording and releasing a song called PFUnk, later renamed F.U.N.K. which is supposed to be a response to the fansites. The song is later sold through iTunes. These battles with youtube and the fansites are still ongoing.

So this is the major events that's taken place throughout the year that was 2007. It was a bittersweet year for me as I didn't see Prince perform at all this year and the fights with the internet was a major bummer but getting a new CD and seeing Prince knock the piss out of the world during the Super Bowl were major highlights for me. People called me after the Halftime show telling me how great he was. My hope with P is that Prince makes better choices in 2008. Resolve the internet issue, release a kickass CD and tour the world again. If only it could be that simple but this is Prince we are talking about here. Thanks for taking the time to read this and let us know how 2007 was with you and Prince, good, bad or indifferent.

Happy New Year everyone!!!!! biggrin

Without doubt 21 nights in London. What a buzz that was. I didnt get to see my first show till the 24th of August, but it kicked off a marathon of shows for me.

There are far too many highlights here to mention, but a stand out for me is also linked to the org, was meeting up with many of the orgers on a regular basis throughout the shows and some on the clipper down to waterloo after .

And a very special thanks again to those orgers that made it possible for my brother and I to get into the aftershow on the 21st. At 7pm that evening, we still had no aftershow tickets and it certainly did not look like we would get any.

Then Domebaby69 and Mentalist came up to me and said they had 1 spare ticket, I asked how much, they laughed and said no, just take it. You have a better chance of getting a second ticket if you have one already. I think the expression on my face must have been priceless.

Later that night, we were outside the indigo, and the elusive second ticket had still not surfaced, my brother got a call to his phone, that we should stand at the barriers by the entrance. Orgers Lovealotbare and Purplepassion72, had come up with an ingenius plan, next thing we knew, we were inside. Plus about 4 other orgers, who also had no tickets.

That for me was the ultimate experience, a real community experience and naturally the aftershow was a 3 hour not to be missed experience to boot

Pcam you have summed it up well and what a yr it has been

Peace N B Wild and a Happy New Year to you all
If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

Great post! I was lucky enough to catch 4 of his Vegas shows and 1 after jam. I almost made it out to Minneapolis for his perfume launch and First Ave. gig but work got in the way, and unfortunately London just didn't fit into my schedule either...kinda bummed about that too, but Prince has definitely had a busy 2007 and to keep up with him is too hard...good trick if you can do it! biggrin wink

I guess I'll just have to save some money and energy for 2008!

Cheers!

2. Superbowl XLI

i rarely watch it, unless it’s the Cowboys or Steelers
[nostagic feelings from their 70s/80s rivalry ...
the good old days of Landry, Staubach & Dorset]

i cooked while the guys watched the game.
i peeped in for all the commercials (loved Oprah-Letterman commercial!)
i was ecstatic when they announced Billy Joel as the opening act, wonderful surprise!

as i watched Billy tinklin’ the ivories, i saw noticeable droplets of rain, like really pretty darned thick!
so i got curious about the weather, how it would affect the game, and God Forbid, P’s performance!
i saw from a distance the game looked pretty bad, messy, slick, a Bitch!
then came the moment i had made sure the house had been waiting for ... P live!

Thoughts on Superbowl Performance 2007

The Rain
The Purple Lights highlighting the Rain
The Electricity of his Performance in the middle of a Storm w/millions watching LIVE.
It felt a little like being on a roller coaster.

It was thrilling, but awful to fear something COULD happen to P during the show!
True or False? i don’t know, but common sense tells me it was a possibility.
if nothing else, Lightning could have been fatal,
but my fears from the electrical perspective were more man-made.

i wish someone would write a really good article in Rolling Stone or something
to explain how the heck P pulled that off.
kinda adds new meaning to the song, “I Would Die 4 U.”

i believe this is 1 of the greatest moments in ALL of LIVE Television History

PEOPLE: “Hey You, Is there anybody out there”??

3. Purchasing 1st version of ‘Guitar’ online as a ‘work in progress’

so damn cool! the song actually convinced me to go to Vegas . . .
selling a work in progress is a very progressive idea, i think.

doh! cool

4. 3121 Club in Las Vegas

Original final weekend, prior to sold-out, holdover weekends - March.

Fav Memories

* opening Fri night's show from the back of the house (in MY FACE) w/"A Love Bizarre"
(Sheila E., "We shall Mark you PRESENT!")

* staying in the same hotel as Club 3121, attending 2 Prince shows in a row,
ordering room service, a very spiritual & contemplative P kinda Saturday

* seeing Prince's feet for the first time in a poster from the "Te Amo Corazon" video shoot.
it was for sale in the 3121 booth, but i regretfully didn't purchase it

* my pending-fiancee and i calling off our engagement upon my return because i went to 3121 Vegas
(alone instead of not at all)

5. Getting 2nd version of ‘Guitar’ thru Verizon for FREE!

the video snippet/teaser w/the twins persuaded this __-something to “download” it, which was a challenge!
it’s the only song on my phone . . . kinda fun in public sometimes

guitar

6. Minneapolis 07/07/07

“Let’s Hear it for the Kid”
i mean really, i would have liked P to perform in the big environmental concert,
but on 2nd thought, i saw a home-town, self-made man paying respect to and bonding with
“where he came from” and “where he lives.”
i have always greatly admired him for staying in Minneapolis despite his celebrity.

By golly he (we) all have the right to choose EVERYDAY & how it’s gonna play.
that was ‘HIS’ DAY, and that was how HE CHOSE to spend it, and i GET IT.
love the perfume bottle, btw.

Always remember where you came from . . .clapping

didn’t he receive something like a key to the city or some kind of municipal accolade in Minnie that day?

7. Release of “Planet Earth” CD

as US Fam, i was really ticked off about Europe getting Planet Earth for FREE before US could even hear it,
but i believed then and now he had marketing reasons for doing so.

i was SO excited to finally open up my copy from my Amazon pre-ordered purchase,
but frustrated others in US got it day of release, while i STILL AWAITED mine in the US Mail.
fortunately, i saw a fun home-video of “The One U wanna C” on the Org, which tided me over during the wait.

8. 21-Day London-Layover 4 Millions

Good for P & Europe.
Too bad for US.

Cool reports of shows, such as Sir Elton’s guest appearance,
the video snippet of “Joy in Repetition” on 3121 website, and although intermittent,
some really wild reports of aftershows being “off the hook.”
btw, loved the dude on the Org who said P talked to him thru the fence and said,
“Nah, we ain’t playin’ (the aftershow) tonight.”

Tryin’ to figure out if he lived in that darned white on-site tent for the duration of his time in London
& how that worked out logistically, if he did it . . .

Another article i’d like to see written:
“What is it like to live “on-site” during a tour,
ADJACENT to the multiple 1000s performance venue in a friggin’ tent?”
almost sounds Biblical, dude

lol

Hearin’ reports of “Somewhere Here on Earth” video being shot and seeing the teaser for it.
CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS VIDEO

sexy

Chelsea Rodgers stuff/Fashion Show/Video
Best of all was seeing the close-up pic of P seated in a fashion show next to Trudy Styler (Sting’s wife).
he’s smilin’ friendly & respectfully at her.
it’s a really funny pic cause you can’t tell who’s boots are who’s -
Trudy's or P's boots are so similar? was it the camera angle?
i dunno, i just liked it.

9. Intellectual Property Considerations of/in the early “Information Age”
(especially relevant to all forms of digital music/art/media)

takin’ on alotta Heat on the St.
The Kid anticipates and faces the noble cause of Digital Artists' Rights & Ownership.
More ... tbd.

CONCLUSION

Anyone wanna co-sign that 007 kicked ass for Prince Rogers Nelson?
i give it 2nd place to 1984, FAM.

To celebrate, Prince performs a special show for a limited number of fans at Macy's and then later that night, performs at First Avenue. It was a short show, but it's his first performance there in 20 years.

Happy New Year everyone!!!!! biggrin

You forgot the main show at Target on 07/07/07 which is probably the best of the 3, in my opinion.

Thank you! I'm going to add that in. biggrin
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that
