they got the question mark there, so obviously they don't even know. his album hasn't sold too well last time i checked. which doesn't mean it wasn't good (i thought it was okay ). he kicked ass at the super bowl. but other than that and the two or three times i saw his verizon wireless ad. i haven't seen anything about him on tv (other than about his recent litigations and such) or heard him on the radio even. so i don't think he had the best year in music. not at all. not like you asked me anyway, though.

From a UK perspective, I guess he did. However, he'd have to follow it up with some serious publicity, some sort of live DVD from the O2 shows and possibly even a new album to stay in the public eye over here.

When you consider that most over here had forgotten he existed, and of the ones that did most probably thought the Gold Experience was his last album, the hype surrounding the shows and album giveaway really have turned the perception of Prince around over here. His Ultimate album started to sell, the shows sold out and the press were extremely interested in his private life again. A huge turnaround. Declaring a liking for Amy Winehouse's music helped as well.

If Prince goes into hiding, or focuses on the US again this year, the UK public will probably quickly forget him. I'd imagine no one who went to any of the shows will forget that, but I'd bet the dross from the X-Factor etc. will be talked about more yet again. Shame really.

From a non-UK perspective Prince was a complete non-event this year, as he has essentially been, mainstream-wise, for the last 14 odd years. The Super bowl performance was incredible, but for those outside of the states the super bowl is generally a complete and utter non-event. If you weren't a big Prince fan you wouldn't of known about it at all.

No real promotion of album or a single, no video, no radio play, you can't go down to a record store or mall and pick up a dvd of his latest (or any) recent live tour, like you can with virtually any other act on the planet... - the only mention you get of him in the media is generally negative in the sense that he's generally portrayed as that 80's guy who's famous for changing his name to a squiggle and suing fans. (It's almost like he wouldn't be out of place on an episode of the farcical boston legal as one of danny crane's nutty clients).

Seems like there's a whole generation of music lovers who have no real idea about the guys musical talent and just consider him in the michael jackson school of over-rated, has-been 80's pop stars. Really, that's a disgusting state of affairs. Proof that the guy has no idea how to promote his legacy.

Sad.

Maybe Prince is just tired right now. Prince has worked very hard since he was a boy of fifteen.

I have read the article 3 times already and I still have no idea what point the author is trying to make but the following quote from it is hilarious "I thought it devalued the album, cheapened the whole process of trying to bring a record to the wider public and many people actually had to buy a newspaper they typically wouldn't read and threw it away."

Well, it was a very cost effective way of getting an album out to 2.8 million people in one day.

The effort of having to dispose of the newspaper unread, well that is a small price to pay. I imagine a bigger issue would be trying to dispose of the cd after listening to it, although there are wonderful combi schredders on market these days.
