Lets talk about....the music.

Ok, so I pop in here every once in a while to see whats new with prince. Well tonight while I was "TRYING" to fall asleep. (Which I failed at) I brought out my MP3 player and started to listening to prince. First song, "One Of Us"...which gave me chills just hearing the beautiful melody flow through my ears to my brain and soaking there. "The Holy River"..wow. "The Holy River" has always been one of my personal favorites, but I didnt really take the time to listen to it this year, and when I listened to it tonight the lyrics were almost silently screaming at me. It brought me to tears. I've been through so much crap this year with drugs, alcohol and boys and it just shook me inside. "The Love We Make" sent me into a spiritual state...just meditating and soaking in that love that our creator has for us. I'm religiously confused, but I DO BELIEVE and I DO have a connection with my maker that I can understand. And I'm a very spiritual person indeed. "Still Would Stand All Time" was a tear jerker. Prince wrote a powerful, intense yet soothing ballad right there, and I wish he got more attention for it.

Let's go down 2 the holy river,
If we drown then we'll be delivered.
If we don't then we'll never see the light.
If U die before U try,
U'll have 2 come back and face the light.
When U believe it, U got a good reason 2 cry.

There's a serious dearth in the discussions about music 'round these parts. Perhaps the mods should consider splitting the forum into two parts: Music, and The Man. Threads about his eyebrows and dining habits can only hold fascination for so long.

One of us is rarely mentioned here and I love the song. It’s the first song I usually tear into on my guitar when I pick it up.

My main trouble is with the Trouble & Strife.(Wife) lol

I left the drink ‘n’ drugs behind me years ago, and to this day I don't miss any of it one bit.

You never know where Prince music will take you.wink

I hope 2008 holds a lot of happiness for you.

I'm not usually a big fan of covers, no matter who the original is by or who attempts the newer version. But One of Us is a whole different game. I love it. It exceeds Joan Osbourne's version by miles. I love the way he screams, more than sings, the lyrics. I'm also a big fan of the change from "...just a slob like one of us" to "...just a slave like one of us". That one little word alteration completely changes the meaning and attitude in the song IMO.

I believe many of us would not be able to lift up and over some of our tribulations without the philisophical content of music, and some singers....

During times of difficulty for me, Prince was always there, as well as many other beautiful songs that inspire you....I have to give the song "Step by Step" by Whitney Houston, from "The Preacher's Wife" Soundtrack credit for a moment...because....That song did wonders for me....as far as being patient for resolve goes....And Prince....His music was always by my side....and still is.

Thanks for talking about the music. Emancipation has so many beautiful and touching songs and gets plenty of love from me. I hope you'll keep your head up and that your troubles will be behind you very soon.

You make an excellent point and that would be great for someone who comes here because of music.

You're so right. Emancipation II is just a perfect album all by itself.
I put it on and I drift away instantly just as 'Oh I say, this is
what you wanted...one kiss at a time...got to be up on it, baby...
if i want to make you mine"
Kristina, my only advice for you is, make some time for yourself
without any distractions, any outside influence
find all your love for yourself in those
moments and you won't need any drug or anybody to make you feel good
about yourself. Then someday someone just like that will find their way into your life when you're ready.

Thank you very much =]

Absolutely...Emanciptaion II is just amazing. I remember being 14 when I first bought the album, and it makes SO much more sense to me now than then because I've been in love, out of love, in love, out of love and now securely in love again. And being in love is the most amazing thing anyone could ever expirence and prince's music is simply a reflection of that.

And thank you for the advice. For me, the drugs/alcohol was simply an escape from myself. I've been through so many struggles and addictions of all types that I wanted to run...and I found a way to through cocain, pills & alcohol. I've been sober for about a month, and its been the most hardest thing i've ever done...but I've done it. And music (Prince's included) is one of the biggest things that has helped me through it all. And the only addiction I have left is Cigarettes. =]

Can I get a AMEN???!!! I guess this is the reason I don't really come around the org as much as I use to. Believe it or not, I'm not really interested in what prince wears, or eats or things of that nature. Its cool to see pictures of course...and to hear about who he's dating. If it wasn't for him I wouldn't be able to call Manuela a good "Myspace" friend of mine =]

No problem at all =] I figured it was a little past due! =] And Emancipation is probably one of the top albums to my life's soundtrack. Just because its such a "LOVE" album...and LOVE is what makes my world go round. =]

I agree with you 100%! Its almost impossible for me to listen to Joan Osbourne's version of this song, just because Prince took this song and made it his own. Singing the lyrics and really getting inside of the music. And the guitar in this song just blows my mind. The way he screams the words sends chills down my spine and you KNOW he is really meaning what he's saying. And the change from "...Just a slob like one of us" to "...Just a slave like one of us.." was probably the best change in the song for me.

I won't lie, I can be as bad a gossip junkie as anyone else. But this forum's gotten so overrun with odes to his ass (and what an ass it is!) any serious threads about the music get overshadowed quickly.

Totally agree, some very good music threads get lost here due to these attribute fascination threads, which can be good for a laugh sometimes, but get very tedious after awhile. I also think alot more people would post here, if there was a more dedicated music forum. Maybe Prince: Music and More should be split into 2 seperate forums, just an idea wink

This a beautiful thread you have started Kristina, it takes alot of strenght to write such a post in an open forum. I think many of us have been down these paths in life, dark hallways were there is very little light or comfort and in the end isolation. Overcoming this is a tough struggle, but one which makes one infinately stronger.

I wish you not only a fantastic New Year but many others after it.

Speaking of music, the first time I heard Joan Osbournes version of One of Us,I was almost positive Prince wrote it, as it reminded me alot of Prince´s more spiritual work with other artists. One very notable example being Martika´s Love Thy Will Be Done, which is almost a replica of One Of Us. So I was very pleasantly surprised to hear P´s version, which in my opinion, totally overshadows the original version.

Still would Stand All Time is a fantastic song, especially the text, if you ever have a chance of hearing the live aftershow version on that infamous boot from 1988, it is mindblowing, 11 minutes of sheer bliss, which has that famous quote from Prince "What fool said Will.....it is would" wink

Peace N B WILD
