"Pope"

I heard this song for the first time yesterday. I've fallen in love with it. I usually don't care for Prince rapping, but for some reason, I just like the groove of this tune. Does anyone else like this song?

No, I don't think so. It was just one of like 3 new songs that was on the "Hits" collection. Along with "Peach" and "Pink Cashmere".

The Hits /B-sides discs each also included two previously unreleased recordings which also offered some extra interest for people who had already purchased all of the released material, and offered Warners some extra marketing opportunities:

Hits 1:

Nothing Compares 2 U - previously unreleased version
Pink Cashmere

Hits II:

Peach
Pope

B Sides:

4 The Tears In Your Eyes - previously unreleased version
Power Fantastic
ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

It was also part of Prince's one word title onslaught of the early to mid 1990s, right around to late 1992 to early 1994 that gave birth to such songs as Pope, Interactive, Dark, Pheremone, Papa, Endorphinemachine, Come, Space, Race, Interactive, Shy, Peach, Loose!, LetItGo, and Poem (later Orgasm).

Most of this music was created for an interactive music experience called "Glam Slam Ulysses," in late 1993 that featured the Glam slam club dancers in Los Angeles and budding musical star Carmen Electra. Another song that was featured was called Strays of the World, which later appeared on the early 1998 opus Crystal Ball.

Come, though, was the techo-funk version, not the 11-plus-minute erotic piece that appeared on the "Come" release in sumemr 1994. The rest of the songs were split into the Come and the GOLD experience releases in 1994 and 1995.

Pope includes samples of conedian Bernie Mac from his earlier days performing on HBO's Def Comedy Jam.

Not to mention "Gotta Stop (Messin' About)" which was VERY hard to locate during the pre-Internet days.

Pope is the jam..alot of peeps criticize the song, but I dig it...
the beat drives the groove and P's rapping is carefree and simple...

I LOVE "Pope".

When I firsy heard it, I literally could not stop playing it. It's one of his best rap tracks.

"Who's the funky drummer with the crooked little sticks? He might have better luck if he was drumming with his (bleep)" Blew me away. I laughed til I cried on that line.

"Gotta Stop Messing About" is on the third disc? lol I gotta get that, cause I LOVE that song too!
I love a Man who:
Wears More Make Up Than Me.
Wears Four Inch Stilleto Boots.
Changes His Name To An Unpronouncable Symbol.
Who Changes His Name Back From An Unpronouncable Symbol.
Oh And Most Importantly, Who Is Sexy Little Drop Of Butterscotch

Pope is a cool track! Nothing really memorable but a fun throwaway Prince rap/hip hop song. I think it is from the year 1993. It might be a leftover song from either the Diamonds and Pearls or the Symbol sessions. I dig it though!
You don't understand... I ain't scared uh you mutherfuckers! I love that Bernie Mac sample he uses at the beginning! Bad Ass!
